Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

Telus replaced it with no hassle at all. They said they hadn't heard of the issue, but were beyond helpful. New phone seems okay so far.

UPD on my investigations here (I have this issue STABLE only then I make a first call to a "new" number for this phone).

Thanks for this link, I did the same. I opened a box and put in-out the earphones several times. It's too early to say something by 100%, but apart from before I got mute 100% first calls, I did 4 (four) call to definately "new" numbers now (2 mobile and 2 landline, sorry guys who waked by me at 8 am) and all 4 calls were OK.

    Let's wait and observe...

I've had a similar problem.  About 25% or more of the time when I make a call the iPhone is silent - no ringtone is heard and then the call timer starts but I still cannot hear anything. I assumed the call was failing until someone called me back and told me they could hear me grumbling about my brand-new phone.  So the mic is working but not the speaker. (Not tried it with the headphones in).

Slightly less often than that, but still quite regularly, I get the reverse.  I make a call, hear the ringtone, hear the person answer but they cannot hear me!.

Then again slightly less frequently I get the same scenario as the previous one but the speaker-phone icon is on and the iPhone is stuck on speaker-phone.  You can tap the icon to highlight/unhighlight it but it stays playing at full speaker-phone volume.  The person on the other end still can't hear me though!

Overall it's been a frustrating few weeks with my new 4S.  Apple wanted to charge me £29+ for the courier phone replacement but after much pursuading they've promised to waive the charge and my new phone should arrive today.

I had no idea so many people had the same issue!!

UPD on UPD: this doesn't help. The no audio presents as it was.

    Just a reply in general.

Same issue as most, no audio on receiving end with two iPhone 4S's. (was great fun when calling each other!)

Took to genius bar prior to 5.0.1 being released, was told by the genius it was a known issue, they are working on a software patch which should be out soon. Left with phones as is (not working correctly).

Post 5.0.1 update, updated phones, still had issue, waited a few days just to be sure.

(note: tried all the tricks, restore, setup as new, deleted networks, etc. none worked.)

Made appointment Tuesday morning with genius for same issue, only told them about 1 phone, but brought both to the store.

Checked in and within a few minutes the genius came over and said its a known hardware issue, and replaced the phone without question. Even had a boxed phone with my name already printed on the label prior to me even being there. I also mentioned that my wife's phone was having the issue as well. Again, replaced on the spot without question, though no name printed on the box this time.

While their stories contradicted (sotware/hardware), the new phones we were given perform flawlessly after a few days of usage. Not a single issue with calls. I tend to believe they had a bad supplier of some part(s) which are causing the issue, and if you are experiencing it, take it to a genius and/or get it replaced through apple care.

Of note, the phones both came with 5.0 on them, and not 5.0.1. Have not updated them as of yet.

Hopefully everyone can get the issue resolved, but whatever at the very least get it documented with Apple that you are having the issue.

Swappend my phone at Genius Bar, and also no problem.  Is clearly a hardware issue, so everyone change your phone if you have the problem.  Can we end the thread now?

My replacement arrived yesterday, did the restore from iCloud - have not had a single issue at all. In fact, I think my dishes are cleaner, my wife is nicer to me, my dogs don't bark anymore and my kids started cleaning their room on their own.    No - but in all seriousness, with the replacement phone, the problem is gone. It was clearly a hardware issue.

    Thanks for listening.

Terrible news for me... Nearest relacment office is 1100 km away and I had no plans to go there in a nearest 3 months...

    Still hope it's software bug.

My son has the iPhone 4 with no previous issues. He updated the software to 5.0.1 and now he cannot be heard when he makes calls.

This must surely be a software issue as it's happening to too many who have updated the software.

Come on Apple - sort it out!

For me personally it sounds great - the hope to get an software patch is better that 1100km travel for replacment.

But I meet the same before updating - with iOS 5.00, and than with 5.01... Or you mean that you upgraded from iOS 4?

Well after finally getting a replacement after 2 weeks.  Since I don't have a Apple Store anywhere near and didn't have $850 to spare.  I sent in my phone first and they sent it back 2 times saying they could not reproduce the problem.  So I had to call Apple & spoke to a senior advisor that got my repair approved.  Now I've only had the phone since last night and made 30 test calls & the problem hasn't reappeared.  On the old phone I couldn't make more than 10 callls without having the problem.  But I'll use it for a couple of days of regular use & keep everyone updated.

I went to the genius bar and traded in my FOURTH Iphone 4s (same audio issues on all of them) for my FIFTH phone.  So far, it is working just fine.  But experience has taught me that it might start up again, so I'm still holding my breath when I make each call.

The guy at the Genius Bar had not heard of the issue before but I showed him this thread.  He did say that he had heard that there are two more updates on the way in the coming weeks.  So maybe they're onto it?

Regardless, I got a new phone because I was sick of having to press the speaker phone button in order to hear 50% of my phone calls.

Luckily, my Genius at the bar was very cute so he made the whole process less painful that it could have been. I really can't complain about Apples customer service.  Each time they have been happy to give me a new phone.

Mine is random and on inbound and outbound. Did not have the issue until the recent upgrade. Dumped the Droid because of issues and now this. Always heard how Apple devices never have the issues the Windows has, but are they that good for the extra money?? If they get this corrected soon then maybe so

Update: I just got my new 4S shipped yesterday and so far I've not had this problem. Although I naturally do more texting than calling, but I've called my family quite a bit since I've had it. :) I'm hoping it'll stay that way.

No issues since Monday (had appointment in Apple Store and got a replacement hardware) and counting. Judging by the number of iPhones 4S sold so far (> 4 million by some estimates) and by the number of people on this thread, it would seem that number of faulty phones is less then 10th of a percent. Which makes it very puzzling how some people end up having 2 (or even 3) bad phones in a row, if there is a 1/1000 probability of getting a faulty phone in the first place.
