Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

I am experiencing the same exact problems as others describe.  In my case, I am using Claro Guatemala in Central America and they have tried different things from their side.  Resetting my network connection account, restoring factory settings, etc, etc. but nothing seems to fix the problem.  I can't even access my voice mail from my 4S now.

I had no idea about how many of you were experiencing the same issue.  It doesn't sound like a carrier-related problem, unless different carriers all over the world share some kind of network setting or configuration that causes this problem and others with a different configuration are not affected.  At this point it is hard to say.

Hopefully Apple will pay attention to this critical and severe issue we're all having.  It just doesn't make sense at all to get a phone and you can do almost anything with it except making phone calls!!

I have opened a case in Apple Support Express Lane but because I did it after business hours I won't be able to talk to them until monday.  I expect to have some feedback and support on this problem from them directly and won't allow them to close the case until it is solved.  I'll keep you all posted as soon as anything new comes up.

I am on my 3rd iPhone (replaced at genius bar) 4S 16GB Black AT&T. Having lots of audio issues (annoying static noise when using the mic), dropped calls etc. Is it a problem with particular batch? I use this web-page to find out information using the iPhone serial number: http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html

    All 3 of mine say:

    Production week: 42 (October)

    Factory: C3 (China)

What factory code do you see?

I've already got a replacement which seems to be working now.

My new one was produced in week 45  (November). the factory code now is c3 as well.

only issue i am faced to now is, that the battery is empty much quicker than on my original iphone. hope this will get fixed with ios 5.0.2

Same issue here. No outgoing calls from time to time. Sometimes 20 at a row are ok, then 5 at are row with no audio. Speakerphone on/off usually helps iPhone 4S, 32GB, black, iOS 5.0.1

    Production week: 43  (October)

Factory: DN (China, Chengdu - Foxconn)

Would be really really nice if Apple would just let us know if it's a soft or hardware issue!

That is a great link, thanks for posting.

My first faulty 4S black 32GB with the outgoing call no audio issue was from Production week 40, factory DN, China.

New replacement phone is on it's way, same 4S 32GB I ordered it in Germany....can not check if I have a problem again because I will receive the phone only in a few days. Got the serial number already and the phone is produced in week 44 same factory DN, China.

Does anybody have the audio problem with a phone produced after week 42 ?

I have, the week 43. 1 call from 10 with no audio unless toggle the speaker. Hope on software.

I assume that the root of the problem is some part which detect the level of incoming audio signal and if it's lower than some threshold, it mutes. I thins software has fixed value for all, but hardware part detects different signal from one device to another. That's why:

    - not all users has this issue

    - even those who have not on iOS4 got it on iOS5

    - some got 90% devective calls, some 10%

    - the fix is possible by the software.

    This is my hope.

    Hi guys,

had been having the same issue when using my iPhone 4S on o2 and T-Mobile in Germany: Could not hear anything on some calls made from my iPhone.

Since the next Apple Store was a two-hour drive from our home (which is a lot for people living in Germany/Europe), I decided to have my phone sent in to AppleCare. When it arrived back in my mail 4 days later, there was an Italian sheet of paper (by inconvenience, I do not understand any Italian - I do not know why they would ever suppose I was an Italian-speaking person) saying that no repairs or exchanges have been made since the problem could not be reproduced. The first call I made with my old phone had the same problem appearing again. Furiously, I called Apple Support again and had them retrieve my phone another time. The same thing happened (though the repair summary was in German this time...), no replacement, no repair. This time, they updated my iOS to 5.0.1, which actually made the problem appear less often, but it still happened. And it is very annoying when making important calls and hanging up on the call partner since I could not hear any audio. The workaround, activating the speaker and deactivating it again, worked, but I was not really keen on using it for the next couple of years... so I made an appointment at a Genius Bar and right now, I'm using a MacBook in the Apple Store to write this entry, holding a brand-new iPhone in my hand. When I detailed the problem and my issues with the Apple Support to him, he asked no further questions and had the phone replaced instantly. I have been making some test calls and the problem has not appeared again yet... will continue testing.

Same issues on my 4S 64gb.  It would be nice to hear something official from Apple - as in confirming that there clearly is a problem.

Support advised me to restore to factory settings but didn't seem too optimistic that this would be a successful fix.  The guy said he had come across this problem previously and suggested that I may end up having to change my phone, not the most convenient option as my closest Apple store is 100 miles away.

Come on Apple, speak up and at least tell us that you recognise there’s a problem and that you're working on a fix!

but for me it is software problem, that on incoming calls no problem, it is as if the software is confused between the 2 antenna or something

warranty applies to the region the phone is from. lame, but true. i suggest you plan a trip to the us for an exchange, or try restoring the iphone first, see if that helps.
