Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

I would like to report the steps of what is happening with my iPhone 4S

    Colour: Black

    Capacity: 16GB

    Factory: C3 (China)

    Production week: 42 (October)

    1- When trying to originate a call, the call fails then, after 4 seconds, the signal bars drops to zero an the phone starts to searching for network;

2 - then after find again carrier network it performs normal calls and even accessing internet via 3G

3 -BUT...after some 3G browsing, it suddenly stops accessing 3G and it start working again only if I follow the steps above...again...it is not funny at all. Very frustating...

I really hope that Apple Tech support team with be able to fix it asap and that it would be via software upgrade - not hardware avoing millions of replacements

I bought my iphone 4S in France and now I am using it in Brazil.

Please report if you see the same.

    Thanks

    Frank

I'm having the same issue regarding hearing no sound when I make an outgoing call.  It probably happens about 25% of the time for me.  I call and dont hear a ring or anything, but the timer continues to count as if the call is connected.  I hang up and call back and it almost always works fine the 2nd time, but the person always says they could hear me, but I never heard anything.  All of my friends are also getting tired of me calling, hanging up and calling back as well.  This is a huge issue.

I have the exact same issue starting this morning.   Last night everything was ok.   Thisorning I wake up and I can hear any sound during calls and the other person cannot hear me.   Everything else works the way it's supposed to.  I have sprint and was hoping it was some sort of network problem so I wouldn't have to replace my phone.

    This is getting frustrating..

I have a new iphone 4S 16G and every single day i have problems with making calls. I call someone but although i dont hear any ring on the earpiece the counter starts and i cant hear the other side as if its completely muted.

I didnt pay a whole bunch of money to not be able to do the most basic task a phone should: make a call!!

Please fix this issue ASAP, not to mention the extremely terrible battery life of the 4S, doesnt last more than half a day with less than average usage.

Same problem, no earpiece audio on some outgoing and incoming calls.  Reboot does not solve problem, switching between speaker fails also.  Calls can be made using bluetooth and another speaker, but earpiece does not work.  Problem occurs about 2 out ot 10 calls.  Same problem on some incoming calls...very frustrating.  Will call Apple, but until Apple recognizes the problem it is a waste of time.

Bought my 4s black sim free in UK (Westfield store) last week. Battery is appaling: dead in 5 or 6 hours. Even worse though is this no audio on outgoing calls issue. Looks like I will have to return mine too. £600 for this is a disgrace.

Same deal; seems to happen when making local calls w/o area code prefix. Pretty **** disappointing when you've waited years to get one then it won't even complete calls! It's obviously an issue.

Does anyone from Apple actually read this forum? If so then why the silence? Surely it would be in their interests to acknowlege there is a problem and let us all know what they are going to do about it?

My iphone 4 guarantee runs out next week and I'm defo taking out the applecare extended warranty before then. It's working OK at the moment but after all the problems my son and you guys are having I can't afford to risk wasting £500 on a phone.

    Yup - same problem here!!!!!

Just got a new iPhone 4S 32GB and within 5 days the earpiece is not working - it worked fine initially.  BOTH inbound and oubound calls do not work - cannot hear.  If I call someone (local or long distance), or someone calls me - they can hear me talk, but I cannot hear them.  Also when I dial, I cannot hear the ringing when the phone has dialed and waiting for an answer.

It sounds like everyone here has the same type of issue, just slightly different results or manifistations of the same issue.  Some have it intermittently, my earpiece stopped working and hasn't worked since. I've tried all the suggetions on this post and nothing works.

I can't believe some of you won't take your phone back, and you will just sit it out and hope for the best!  It's more than a game/texting toy for me...I actually need to use the phone as it's business critical for me. The only way Apple will listen is if they are required to replace all the bad phones out there.  I can't depend on taking a chance with another iPhone as my phone is business critical.  I'm really disappointed, I'm taking this back tonight and going back to my BlackBerry until I can figure out what I want to do going forward (my first iPhone and I waited so long...what a let down) - no iPhone for me until Apple acknowledges the issue and has a fix!

The iPhone 4S is the most bug ridden iPhone ever. I've replaced mine 5 times and it's either the outgoing call problem, or it's a yellow screen. I've also experienced static and echo and the network seems to disconnect arbitrarily and quite often. Wish I hadn't sold my iPhone 4 would have given up on the 4S already. The 4S when you think of it is really a token release. Siri is great but can be implemented even on the 3GS and it's nice to have a faster processor but really not necessary as iPhone 4 is already pretty fast.

    Facing same issues in Japan

    iPhone 4S 32GB Black  iOS 5.0.0

    Carrier: Softbank

Every few calls, i cant hear anything but myself as an echo.

Happens nearly every day and quote often several times a day.

Usually seems to happen between long periods of inuse.

Successive calls almost always work. Calls immediately after a good call always work.

On one isolated instance, incoming calls would automatically go to speaker (the speaker button would immediately turn blue) and I would hear the caller voice out of the bottom speakers.

Disconnecting and receiving the call again would repeat.

The caller was using iPhone 4 on iOS 5.0.0 and couldnt hear anything from my side.

    Needs to be addressed.
