Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

Come Apple get your act together on this one. Got my wife a new 4S 16GB, and guess what? no audio on out going calls/ speaker button defaults to on/ try call second time works OK.

This problem is not going away. The trouble is you have too many numbers guys crunching away to find at what point the complaints get to the critical mass to formally admit you have  an issue. What happen to just doing the right thing by your major stakeholders, that is the customer not the shareholder! Remember without customers the shareholder value is worth "Swat".

As for your reseller policy thats just great. A day old phone that was not "fit for purpose" on supply and they offer to send it away to have it repaired. B#####it.

PC and android are looking better everyday.

I may only been one customer but have already talked 4 people out of iPhone with my experience.

Customers who have a good experience may not tell anyone, a customer who gets shafted tells everyone.

    Cheers

Though I still have not gotten the iphone yet, because of this one very important complaint, I did submit a complaint with Apple in hope that they will listen to those that want the phone, but will hold off until this issue is fixed.  A phone is for calling and this issue is big.  At least it is for me.

Good luck to those with the issue

Apple will not respond on this...

Stop waiting and get a replacement phone using the apple care program.

Me and a lot of others in this forum also thought it might be software related, that it might be fixed with ios 5.0.1, but in fact it's 100% hardware related. I exchanged the phone (as many others did), and it's working flawless since then. So it's a hardware fault, simply exchange the phone..

Place a call...... Dead silence. People calling me..... No ringing just dead air.

Problem #2 iphone will not connect to 3G. A tiny circle replaces the 3G on screen then nothing works. Can't use Internet, can't text message, no Foursquare, no Facebook, NO APPS!

Today I am scheduled to receive my 3rd replacement for this issue in under 30 days. 64GB Sprint iPhone 4S. This is flat out the worse phone I have ever purchased! The worst past about it is that I purchased from Apple and not a Sprint store or Best Buy. Now, I can not simply retun the phone and get my $500 back because they don't carry anything except for the iPhone. I miss my Android!

November 1st I signed up for my annual upgrade at apple by purchasing new iPhones (Sprint). One of the two has always been an issue. That is a 50% fail rate. Today being my third phone brings the fail rate to 66%.

The Apple Store employees are complete jerks about returning my phone (s) even though I am under my 30 days. They want to fix it. No thanks APPLE! if I wanted a refurb I would have bought one.

If this 3rd replacement phone does not work I will be getting a hold of my Sprint rep to figure out a way to void upgrade contract and return all APPLE products.

P.S. starting to smell like Bill Gates in here. Windows is notorious for having their customers beta test the products, that is what apple appears to be doing now....

OK, sadly I have an update on my problem with my 4S...

I was able to talk to Apple support yesterday and just after I mentioned the problem I was having, they immediately said I needed a replacement for my failing iPhone.  They asked me to please go to my nearest Apple Store and I would get a replacement right away.  It all sounds great except for one single small detail.  There are no Apple Stores in my country!!!  The only way to get the iPhone is by the phone carriers and we all depend on them to get warranties, replacements, etc.  Oh!!  it got interesting for me.

From that moment on, I started to feel that no matter what they say, I was so screwed up!!!

Indeed, my feelings were right.  After them trying to figure out a way for me to get a replacement, I was told they are unable to help in my case because even if I pay to ship my failed phone to the US, they can only replace it with one from the US carriers, they cannot replace my phone with an unlocked model because of agreements they have with the service carriers.  This is so fu***ing unbelievable!!!!!

Well, finally I ended up contacting my service provider and as I expected I won't get a replacement from them unless Apple states officially there is a problem with the phones and both the carrier and Apple get to an agreement on how to replace them without the carrier absorving any costs.  So I'm pretty much f***ked up by both my service provider and Apple.  I will keep pushing my carrier to have my phone replaced but it looks like there is still a long road ahead on this problem.

Please... tell anyone you know to stay away from the 4S for a year at least until Apple finally get all their s**t together.  I miss my 3GS so much now!!

What a lame support and excuse from Apple!!  So their "warranty" and Apple care means s**t unless you're in the US but even though, we pay them here exactly the same for their crappy beta-test phones and "support".

This upsets me.  I am a huge Apple fan but I always get a little nervous whenever I but a product because I may end up with issues that Apple won't acknowledge.  It has never happened to me until now.  I only thank god that I was under my 30 days.  I have another 30 days but part of me just wants to return the phone because I am afraid I will encounter another issue and be stuck with it.

This mute problem may only affect a very small number of phones but does that mean that those people are just out of luck?  This conversation is taking place on THEIR OWN SITE but is anyone paying attention?  Has anyone at Apple thought about addressing this issue?

I have learned a huge lesson:  Never stand in line to buy fresh-off-the-line products from Apple.  WAIT until it is safe to go back into the water!

I wasn't an Apple fun before but I was amazed how great the iPhone looks and how it fit's in hand and so on. So I bought it. Together with "no audio" issue. Even this, I'm still happy with this device, it's a great toy for boy.

I think it's useless to discuss here how to avoid this issue or from where it's growing. Initially I was trying to foung the sequence which leads to this no audio, and found it - but afterwards this logic was fall down.

I understood why Apple exchange items easily - because for now it's more profitable than make discussions. May be they needs a testiong bodies with obvious defect. But the thing I'm really can't uderstand, is

    WHY APPLE KEEPS SILENCE?

Apple! It's your flagship for the moment, isn't it? A few words in the forum costs pennies, isn't it? So WHY?

FREE IDEA for this BUG FIX for Apple.

Actually, I'm not killed with this bug as my iPhone makes defective "only" 20% and "only" outgoing calls (I'm russian and we are have slave nature here, if somebody didn't kill you - this mean he is the best men ever and your master forever). But the EXPECTATION ir annoying, it going to be a habbit to look at the screen if silence in earpfone. So, to avoid it TEMPORARY before fixing the root of this bug:

Just make a smal patch, which will switch each outgoing call to speaker for 0.1 sec and back.

This will save a lot of nerves of your CUSTOMERS, berore you will release a real fix.

With great disappointment, I went back to my iPhone 4 that makes perfect phone calls. I had the iPhone 4s and I was afraid to answer or make calls because of the audio problems. I believe the problem is far greater, but most of the people don't use the phone very much anymore and is not a big deal to them. Apple needs to step up quality control as this device should have not been released with this kind of issues. I had 3 different iPhone 4s and each one had some sort of issue... What are the odds of that? I would say great! So this is not affecting a small number of phones... The last one I had did not have the outgoing no sound issue, but a microphone lag when receiving calls. I would answer and the person on the other end could not hear me for a good 5, 6 seconds if they had the patience to stay on the phone...!

I am a Apple fan and I had every iPhone since they first came out. The reason the iPhone became a great success was because of the built quality and attention to detail Apple had! Now that Apple is selling 100 of million iPhones doesn't mean that we don't deserve an equally great product, or Apple's accountability should be less than it was before!

Apple please read this and acknowledge and make the appropriate changes!  Sometimes you have to lose money to make money!

If you want to keep the momentum going, you have to do right by your customers and not by just your investors!!!

I hate to see this company start going downhill! Please spend more money on quality control and testing before releaseing new products because you are hurting your loyal customers!

So, this morning I exchanged my phone again at the Apple Store - I am now on my 4th iPhone 4s.  My initial problem with the phone muting during calls was a minor inconvenience compared to the problems I have had since that device.  50 to 95 % of my calls have been failing (50% on iPhone 4s #2 and 95% on #3.)  After picking up a new phone, I walked over to AT&T and they gave me a new sim card... (and adjusted my phone plan to save my family $100/month!)

Anyway, everyone throughout all of this has been super nice...  If this phone doesn't work, I will put my sim card into my 'old' iPhone 4 and wait for a new batch of working 4s's to come in, I guess.

I have been a mac user since the old white ibooks (1999-2000) and an iPhone user since the first generation (with AT&T for a little longer than that).  It is really unfortunate that this is giving so many people a bad impression of apple products - which usually are extremely user friendly out of the box.  And it is not just those of us with bad phones, it is everyone my phone has hung up on or muted...  Unacceptable.

That's why I'm not running to change my one... I got samllest of the issues, the battery seems to be much more terrible, or loosing 95% calls.

And that's why I'm sure it's software problem^ some sensor produce a signal with deviation from unit to unit and from call to call. Dut some wrong driver interrept it wrong way.

APPLE, WHY DON'T YOU JOIN OUR PROFFESIONAL AND PRODUCTIVE BRAINSTORM?

You know, now I've had this new phone for several hours and I have not dropped a call.  This time I did not update to iOS 5.0.1, so I am still on 5.0.  I think that iOS update just exacerbated the problem!  Hopefully the rumors are true and there's a new update (5.0.2) coming out this week.  My battery seems okay so far, too.  Fingers crossed.

Same thing here, iPhone 4S used with German vodafone business contract.

No audio on about 20% of outgoing calls - unacceptable when used as a business phone.

Temporarily switching on and off the speaker solves the issue but still annoys the person on the other end.

I'm giving Apple some more time to fix this issue, otherwise this is my first and last Apple product. I have already talked some people out of getting an iPhone 4S and told them to wait for it to be fixed first.

I do like the other features but if I can't reliably use a phone for what it was designed for (making calls!), it's worthless.

Longtime lurker, first time poster (I think 1st time anyway)

Yesterday I returned my 2nd 4s for a full refund. Bought the first on the 11th, the second just last Saturday the 19th. Had the classic issues in this thread on both phones, the speakerphone issue (outgoing calls immediately turned on the speakerphone) and then the oytgoing calls I could not hear the other party when conected. So I'm out $110 in gas (three trips to a 90 minute away ppple store) and nothing to show for the $110.

I THINK this is a combination hardware/software issue, at least in regards to the not being able to hear the other party and occasionally they not hearing some of the users that have posted here. I have a feeling it's related to the new two-anntenae system where one is for incoming, one for outgoing. Not sure how or why, but that's my sneaky suspicion.

So, I am going to try one more time (local this time, my local Best Buy has ONE in the flavor I want, however its serial number is very close to the two I already returned 90 miles away). If it has the same issue, then I'm just going to return it for a full refund and wait it out another month or so and see what develops with Apple acknowledging tis issue and what they intend to do about it. If it doesn't have the issue, then hopefully I'll be a very happy camper and show it off at Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow :-)

I am disapointed. First time owner of an iPhone. I have exactly the same problem with no sound or with sound in loudspeaker mode. 4s and telenor operator in Sweden. I have been promised a new iPhone to be sent to me, but I actually think this may be a sw problem. I will give it one more try.
