Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

Identical problem here on 4s 64GB using ATT.  Also having similar anomolies with my bluetooth where callers can't hear me on outbound calls.  Problem solved every time I reboot for the first 1 or 2 calls, then it happens again.  This is totally a software issue.

Restore setup as new, if that doesn't fix it then yes it is a hardware issue not software issue simple as that.....

Yes exactly what I was saying about using bluetooth.  I mean it makes the phone useless.  Just about every call I make now is requiring me to use the speaker trick..  I called in and got the run around yet again.  I have several friends whom this is affecting too.

Like I said "Restore setup as new, if that doesn't fix it then yes it is a hardware issue not software issue simple as that....." If you are still having the problem then yes it is HARDWARE

Just to address a few peoples' concerns about a genius bar replacement as a "refurb", "reconditioned", "remanufactured", etc.

None of those terms truly apply to what you're getting as an exchange.  I know you just spent a lot of money on a new phone and don't want to get some inferior, used product to replace it.

    A couple things to consider:

If you read the fine print of your warranty, it explicitly states that your exchange must be "equivalent-to-new".  The fact that Apple may or may not use internal parts from other iPhones is irelevant; because you can't say that your product is equivalent to new unless it's the.. same as a new one!  New glass, new steel frame, new buttons.. if they were just used on some other phone and then whiped off, they'd be "refurbished," not "new".

But none of this info REALLY matters because it really just boils down to your level of trust in Apple, as all the information you get from any Genius is heresay anyway.  The actual process of how these parts are made is a secret that is not shared with many.

And the final argument I'll make is, if the phone you're getting has fewer symptoms than the one you're refusing to give up, where's the logic in that?

I don't think Apple will treat this as a serious problem until the people who are affected by it all start swapping their phones for replacements at Apple stores.

I know some people still think it's a software issue, and to be honest, we still have insufficient evidence to say with certainty that it is a hardware issue but in my opinion all of the evidence so far seems to point to a hardware issue.

You're right, this is a difficult type of symptom to accurately pinpoint.  But the biggest tell is the fact that an issue would persist after a Restore (and Set Up as New).

That only leaves Hardware or Network issues as the only two remaining causes..

Why does it matter if it's hardware or software?  Why does it have to be EITHER/OR?  Why can't it be both?  Maybe it's a software bug that only affects bluetooth radios out of plant XYZ.

Bottom line:  take the phone back to Apple and make them give you a new one.  Test it before you leave the store.

My replacement hasn't had the issue one time.

Agreed. I've made about 30 calls now since having my replacement and haven't had the issue once. Here's to hoping it stays that way!

I went through 3 iPhone 4Ss. So far 2 out of 3 had a yellow tinted display and 2 out of 3 had the no audio on calls issue. Makes you wonder how many iPhones out there are not defective in some way.

btw: why isn't Apple saying anything about this? Seems that there are enough people who are experiancing it. If I had this issue affecting 2 out of 3 phones I'm either really unlucky or many people have it and are not making phone calls with their iPhones.

A friend of mine who had the same issue just thought it was bad coverage and did not consider reporting it at all!

People have become conditioned to dropped calls to a point where they don't think twice that it could be the phone's fault. Just proves the sad state of network quality these days and what poor quality of service "monopolistic" networks have forced upon consumers.

I was putting up with it for over 2 weeks because I thought it was just AT&T's fault. When I saw it happen once when I was in a strong signal area, thats when the gears started turning in my head and I found this thread thanks to Google.
