Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

But it is also happening to iphone 4 users who have updated to the 5.0 and 5.01 software. This makes me think ther maybe two problems. One is with the iphone 4s and connectivity and the other is with the new software. Otherwise why are iphone 4 users suddenly having problems since they updated? See this link:

I have just switched back to my iPhone 4.  I am running iOS 5 and have not had a problem.  I have read that others have, though.

(After my 4th 4s, I had to be able to use it as a phone, you know?  Swapping out phones at my local Apple store was just giving me phones from the same batch, I think.  So until some working 4s' come my way, I'll be using my old handset.)

Hmm, don't know, maybe the glitch was due to the 5.0.1 update, although that static, echo stuff sounds unfamiliar. I also gave my iPhone 4, with the 5.0.1 update to my wife and she hasn't had any of the problems so far. Perhaps the update effected both phones, but especially 4S, although I'm a bit sceptical.

And about exchanging the phone to a new one? One must understand, that in Finland for instance there are no Apple stores from which to buy or exchange iPhones, but instead the operators demand that an authorized service has a look first, THEN possbily any replacements could take place. So I kinda feel everyone's pain, who are reluctant to give their phone away for yet another week or two right after receiving one.

Dear Apple, any news regarding this problem and how it will be fixed would be highly appreciated!

Well I have an iphone 4 and since the 5.0.1 update I have had the following glitches:

    1. Occasionally, when my phone is in lock mode and in the slide to unlock mode, I get the camera icon at the bottom right and if I click it I can go straight to my camera and take pictures even though the phone is in lock mode.

    2. Again occasionally from the same screen I have the play button showing from the music player. I can click this and it plays music . Once again the phone is in lock mode.

    3. Very occasionally - both the camera icon AND the play button show at the same time.

5.0.1 is a mess of an update and Apple need to sort this out before they lose all credibility.

I really wish I could find a way to go back to the version before 5.0 came out.

Reporting back after 2 weeks. I haven't had a single issue with my replacement. No more outgoing calls problems and the battery life is great. After really, really heavy usage at the end of the day I still have 30% battery left. Very happy so far! My exchange fixed the problem. I hope it fixes yours.

I bought a unlocked 64gb 4s direct from apple Canada.  Having all the problems that are mentioned in these posts.  I am on the Rogers network.  I will be returning the phone to my nearest apple store and getting a replacement.  It seems to be the only remedy.  Thanks for all the posts and updates.  Very frustrating problem.

I have restored the phone through  the DFU mode. Now all works perfectly! The problem has disappeared.

Try to do it. May be it will help...

I have a brand new 64GBiPhone 4s purchased and activated 11-22-11. When a call comes in or when I dial out, the speaker is selected without me doing anything to select it. It seems the telephone itself is selecting speakerphone. When this happens, I can sometimes hear the incoming audi, but have yet to have the other party hear me. This has happened with and without the earbud. If I manually press the speakerphone and turn it "off", the incoming call still cannot hear me. This has happened only intermittently at this point, but seems to be happening with greater frequency this evening.

Was at the apple store the other day replacing my iPhone due to the yellow screen tint issue and being aware of the outgoing call no audio I also tested the replacement phone for the no audio issue with the manager by attempting to call her and whoops no audio issue pops right in front of her, I of course rejected that phone right off the bat. The no audio issue aside, it appears also that every single iPhone they opened for me suffered from a yellow screen (unlike every single iPhone on display at the store). Apple simply can't get it right with the 4S, the most problem ridden iPhone model to date.

I think what frustrates the most is that the 4S is emerging as a token release not worth the upgrade. Admittedly, Siri is an impressive feature, thought it turns out that Siri can run even on a 3GS. I keep hearing people who would rather go back to their iPhone 4 if they hadn't already sold it, I would do exactly the same.

Folks, you're missing the entire point of this discussion if you would read the whole thread rather than the last page!

I had the problem as well - apple of course said they never heard of it, so I printed out this entire thread at the time, and the BusinessWeek article talking about the problem (dated November 6 I believe) and took 5 copies to the Apple Store and gave it to them and told them NOT to tell any more people that they've never heard of it, now they have all the info they needed.  Regardless to say, they didn't like it.

HERE'S THE POINT - I exchanged out my phone for another one, and had to argue with the manager to get a new one (it was only 4 days old) rather than a refurb.  It worked great for about 11 days, I thought the problem was fixed, but it suddenly showed up after 11 days!  So, don't think the problem is 'fixed' with a new phone just because it hasn't exhibited the problem for a week or two - you might be very dissapointed a month or two from now when it might show up again.  We're not out of this mess until the phone works consistantly for months.

I ended up returning my phone and letting them know that I'll get another one as soon as Apple acknowledges the issue and fixes it (which they will never acknowledge).  One of my co-workers also had the problem show up about a week after she got the phone, she had to have a working phone as she actually does international business on her cell (more than a game device), so she ended up getting the Razor.  Apple may be losing customers as a result of this fiasco.

I'm still puzzled as to why people here continue to keep their broken phones hoping for a 'software' fix or because they like it so much.  It seems to be a fairly expensive game and text machine, but to each their own.  Apple will take notice more quickly if you return the phone.

    Good luck!

Almost 14 days ago, I brought my iPhone 4S (with this issue) to the Danish carrier Telenor, where I bought my it. The Telenor dealer shop sendt it to their Danish repair service, and yesterday it was returned to the delaer. The Telenor service team had "updated and tested it" (which I had done myself) and could not replicate the issue. So they returned the the same phone - without replacing it. And half an hour later I got the issue again - of course!!! MEGA frustrating....... So I'll have to bring it to the Telenor dealer again - and take another almost 14 days without my iPhone 4S - and maybe another time - complete MEANINGLESS.

I called the service team, who said that they were not able to replace the phone as the issue was not reported officially from Apple. Please note that I had brought printouts of this thread to the delaer - together with the 4S. But that did not count in their evaluation. FRUSTRATIING!!!! Apple - wake UP!

That's just it, in countries where operators control the service and exhange policies it may very well not be POSSIBLE to exchange the iPhone 4s, even if we wanted to. There is no way you can get a new iPhone over the counter if you have an issue with your phone, even if it's brand new. If Apple doesn't compensate the operator selling the phone due to this issue, the operator most certainly will not compensate the customer either.

And Apple, don't tell me there's no issue with 4s if there's over sixty pages about it on this forum.

In my case they do NOT want to admitt it is a problem and give me a new phone! I bought the white 16gb 4S on the 21'st THIS MONTH, which is Monday! Every 5 calls i make, 1 is without sound... that means 20% of all my calls are lost... I ask of Apple, what is the primary purpose of a telephone?

I am from Romania, I paid 810 Euros (1090 Dollars) for a 16gb phone... I am in my 30 day exchange period and still, i can not benefit from it!
