Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer. 

 

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Well, I'm on my 3rd 16gb 4s and this one is working. No problems connecting and I can hear everyone fine now -- never have to switch to speaker. If I hold the mic too close to my mouth, there is an echo at times, but otherwise the problem is gone. The first 2 phones I had the issue was almost constant. Happened on over 60% of the calls I made.

 

Hopefully it can be fixed with a patch, but at this point, Apple hasn't even acknowledged that it's a known issue (at least not to me).

 

I tried talking to them on the phone, but the only way to accomplish anything was to go to the Apple Store and exchange it for a different phone.

    Has anyone attempted to contact Engadget - SlashGear - and the Better Business Bur. and file a complaint ? Maybe, just maybe, one of those will do some good and report this in their website and get this right in the pocket book for Apple when it is well investigated.  Just a thought

    Same thing here. 50% of outgoing calls have no audio. Thanks for the tip on the speaker, but is just a workaround. Ihope we get a fix soon. Apple should be on this asap.

    Same problems here. Went to Apple Store, (ofcourse the phone was working at this time) Genius (?) tech tells me there's nothing wrong, acted like he wasn't familiar with the issue at all.

     

    Had to use my phone to call my brother to tell him our Father died, you guessed it - he couldn't here me. I'm EXTREMELY disappointed with Apple's reaction to this problem.

    Try this: start an outgoing call, move the phone to your ear and press the "+" volume button several times, WITHOUT separating the phone from your ear.

    I did this and didn't get any better... In fact, it got worst... After i followed your advice the next 3 calls i made were without sound for me while the other person could hear me...

    iPhone 4S, 6 weeks old, and the same audio issues! Come on Apple, get this figured out!!!!!!!

    I spoke with Apple Care today. The representative suggested I backup my iPhone 4s and wipe out all the data and do a complete restore. He says some of my data is corrupt and this procedure is the only way to repair the corrupt data. I guess we all have corrupt data...?

    as i've said earlier, i have no issues thus far, but from the sounds of it, it really does seem like this is a software issue.  maybe i'm wrong, but the fact that toggling the speakerphone on and off solves it, sounds like software to me...

    Apple Care had me do the same thing earlier today....and the result was...drum roll...first call I tried to make had the same issue.

    I might as well join the group, I have a 64 gig AT&T 4S and about 20% of my outgoing calls have no audio. I haven't tried the "workarounds" suggested but will. I have typically hung up and called back, person I was calling said the phone rang but when they answered they could hear nothing.

    Same here:

    Bluetooth On Bluetooth Off, WiFi On WiFi Off, Siri Off (don't like Siri), Case On Case Off. Reset and Full Restore a couple of times but still about 20% of calls no audio at call set-up though counter running.

     

    Tapping Speakerphone usually clears the block, (or dialling a second time). Same problem through Honda Hands Free (BT) where Speakerphone tap gets audio through, but inconveniant (and illegal in UK).

     

    Reluctant to set up Genius if this is a software issue which I presume it is. Any evidence that new hardware consistently fixes this problem?

    такая же проблема и в России с оператором Мегафон. 1 из 10 звонков опонент меня не слешит или идут большие помехи. Лечится включением и выключением громкой связи.

    Оператор тут не при чем. Я свой купил в финляндии, сначала СИМ сонеры, потом Билайн, потом Мегафон. Никакой разницы.

    Given the wonderful response and support from apple to not only my own original post but the hundreds of others......    maybe this thread should be copied and added to any of the online reviews of the iphone 4s especially given that many of the apple stores and their staff "seem" not to know of any difficulties being experienced by their customers.....
