Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

I have a very similar problem with my iphone 4S 16G black. In 1 out of 5 outgoing calls the phone automatically goes to speaker (the speaker button turns blue) and I hear the ring tone and caller voice out of the bottom speakers. But the caller can't hear me. The same happens when I hang up and just call again. When I switch the phone off and on it works fine again or if I try again some time later (1h or more) it often works again as well.

It happens with the headset plugged in as well as without headset.

More seldom the same also happens with incoming calls.

The minute this story is on a major news show, we'll finally get an aknowledgement from Apple. Until then every call will be "the first they've heard of it".

I actually had an Apple Care supervisor, Justin, come to this thread. I wanted him to see that this is becoming quite widespread.

    I too have this problem.

The workaround for me as well is to turn the Speaker on then back off.

I have the exact same problem.

very frustrating. happens often enough to be really annoying. pressing speaker fixes it. this is simply a work-around and is not acceptable for such a "premium" device.

I just sent a message to SlashGear about this issue and hope maybe they will do a follow up investigation on this major issue since Apple refuses to reply to your complaints.

I have a new (3 day old) iPhone 4s (Back/32GB).  I ordered it through ATT, and it replaced my iPhone 4.

Today I used the headphones to place a call, and the call kept defaulting to the speaker.  I could not choose headphones as a source, and if I toggled the speaker button I lost audio completely.

I used the headphones to connect using facetime last night with no issues.

I did a hard resest and a full restore.  Nothing worked.  I have a genuis bar appointment later today.  Sounds like a phone swap is the only solution.

    I'll update after I return.

This is exactly how it works for me as well. After restart the first call is without sound in the earpiece. The second call is normally ok. If you connect the headset, alll calls are routed to the loudspeaker switching on the speakerphone mode even if you disconnect the headset again. Restarting the device will reset.

I think this sounds like uninitiated variables and depending on HW you will get different behaviour.

Do you have same experience or anything similar? Apple??

Following up on my earlier message, my issues have been resolved (for the moment) through a replacement phone from Apple.

I went to the local Genius Bar.  When the tech first tried using the phone, the headphones and mic actually worked.  I had him try a couple of more times, and the phone began to consistently default to the speaker.  He took it in the back, which is where (I assume) there are knowledgable techs.

He returned after several minutes and said that it was a known issue, and although they weren't sure, they thought it might be hardware related.  (I specifically pressed him on this point, and he said they weren't sure).  They swapped my phone without any other questions and let me try a few calls from the store with the headphones using the new device.

I've tried some other calls this evening and things seem to be working fine.  I'm choosing not to restore this new phone from the backup.  I'm just setting it up as a new phone.  Bit of a pain, but I don't want to tempt fate.

    Good luck to everyone.

I have a 16GB model with AT&T. I have been having the same issue as well. I haven't found a way to reproduce it everytime. Turning the speaker on and off works, but is extremely annoying.

My update. Got my third 4s the day before Thanksgiving, only local this time at Best Buy (rather than 65 miles away at the Syracuse Apple Store) and I was leery as the serial number differed from the previously returned two iPhones 4s's by just three alpha-characters in the middle. VERY close in my book.

So far so good! None of the three classis issues in this thread have appeared and I've tested it quite often, all of them after I did do a restore from one of my previous 4S backups (I have a TON of contacts).

NOT being superstitious, I feel I have not now jinxed myself, although I do fear what I've read from some people here, that they developed the problem after a couple of weeks of having the phone. None the less, I have until a week from this coming Wednesday. If the problem develops, back she goes and I'll get the refund and just wait it out until Apple makes a statement and a resolution plan. If not...time will tell.

Yesterday I returned my 2nd 4s for a full refund. Bought the first on the 11th, the second just last Saturday the 19th. Had the classic issues in this thread on both phones, the speakerphone issue (outgoing calls immediately turned on the speakerphone) and then the oytgoing calls I could not hear the other party when conected. So I'm out $110 in gas (three trips to a 90 minute away ppple store) and nothing to show for the $110.

I THINK this is a combination hardware/software issue, at least in regards to the not being able to hear the other party and occasionally they not hearing some of the users that have posted here. I have a feeling it's related to the new two-anntenae system where one is for incoming, one for outgoing. Not sure how or why, but that's my sneaky suspicion.

So, I am going to try one more time (local this time, my local Best Buy has ONE in the flavor I want, however its serial number is very close to the two I already returned 90 miles away). If it has the same issue, then I'm just going to return it for a full refund and wait it out another month or so and see what develops with Apple acknowledging this issue and what they intend to do about it. If it doesn't have the issue, then hopefully I'll be a very happy camper and show it off at Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow :-)

I'm not sure how many calls is going audio out but if you are a proffesional you have to take care if you really didn;t hear anything or the audio problem appeared....

Tomorrow I'll ask for a new Iphone from Cosmote which is my carrier...

But I'll be waiting an Apple response to all these problems which came with 4S....
