Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

Thought the issue was just with my phone until I found this and other threads on the web. No audio for outgoing calls and having to switch speaker on and off to hear tone. Spoke to a colleague at work today who recently bought a 4sand he has the same problem. Not good.

Update: I did the hard reset, restore charade and that does not change anything. I called Apple and they are sending me a new one. The  person on the phone did not respond to my claim that is a widespread problem. Will update once I get the new phone and see if it works.

    iP4S-64G-VZW 5.0.1

Bi-directional audio failures intermittant, but only when call are outbound.  Failure A: call connects, but no audio is heard on iP4S handset.  Repeated attempts to place outbound calls are required for call to be heard by both parties.  Failure B: call connects, but in speaker phone mode (regardless of whether or not the blue indicator light is lit/toggled) even though speaker phone mode was never engaged.  When this occurs the microphone on the iP4S handset does not function, but all sounds are heard through the handset speakerphone.  Repeated attempts to place outbound calls are required for call to be heard by both parties.

I have the iPhone 4, iOS 5.0.1 and almost the minute the 4S came out, I started having problems with the audio (as well as the home button but that's another forum!). When I call out, and the person I called can't hear me, though I can hear them. I call back and it's fine. Happens about 1/4 of the time.

Talked to Apple Care today, they made sure I had followed all the usual suspects (resetting, restoring, etc.) before saying "Yes, it is definitely a hardware issue."

    New one on the way...

Same problem here. Got my phone brand new a couple of weeks ago, iPhone 4S, iOS 5.0.1, provider is Telus in Canada. Used the phone for about a week without any problem but recently it keep muting all outgoing calls. When I get my ear close to the phone when I'm dialing, the display shut off and cannot hear the dial tone or the call itself. It seem to work only with speaker phone but mute key does not respond then. Tried with Siri on and off also done reseting, restoring and also got the SIM card replaced but this has not resolved the issue. Definitively an hardware/software bug here. Hope they will fix this issue in the next update...along with the fast depleting battery problem but everything else work fine !!!   Thanks

I am having same problem. It's intermittent but I can't find a common thread. Took it back today and they told me to restore to factory using itunes and they woulId exchange if that doesn't fix the problem. Told them I'd see them tomorrow because since the problem happened with the very first call I made on the phone after taking it out of the box I wasn't very confident that a factory restore would fix it but that would try that. Waiting for itunes to load all my stuff back on the phone after the factory restore then we will see. Good luck...it seems like this is a widespread problem that Apple is not commenting on or going public about.

Update:  I visited the AppleStore as suggested by others here.

I suppose I was in luck as my phone was stuck in speaker mode minutes before.

Its actually only the 2nd time this happened to me.

The guy took a quick look as I demonstrated dialing out.. and iPhone went straight to speaker.

He commented that the earpiece and headphone jack was broken and the phone would need replacement.

Beyond this he wouldn't say and I didn't press.

The replacement iPhone does not exhibit any of the audio issues so far (now 4 days in use).

For those of you swaping your phones... take note.

Restore to the new phone before wiping out your old phone's data. My iCloud backup didn't work and both the support genius and I had a good scare until I restored from a older, local backup out of iTunes.

    Wow,

Same issue.  I bought my 4s today and the first call I made had no audio on the other end.  I didn't think much of it until it kept happening so many times today.  I have about 1 in 5 calls do this.  So disappointing.  We miss you, Steve.

Pushing the mute button twice seems to do the trick.

    I want my money back.

i can't hear incoming or outgoing calls unless the phone is in speaker mode. Apple needs to address this fault. It has been the same for various friends and family members who have newly purchased 4S phones.

Come on guys, if this matter won't appear to get the attention it should, do as someone has suggested: flood the complaints and disappointment to any tech or Mac sites on the internet who hopefully then will cover this matter somehow on their site. This b******t has gone on long enough.

I was having the same problem - no sound when I called someone. Happened about 1 out of every 5 calls. I took the phone back to the Apple store twice. The first guy looked at it and tested it and couldn't replicate the problem - wouldn't acknowledge there was a problem. On my second visit, I went armed with the link to this thread. I insisted on getting a new phone since I was still in my 30 day period. No problems at all with the new phone. Volume overall is louder on my 2nd phone.
