Hi guys,
I have the opportunity to buy 4 x 2GB of RAM which is/appears to be the same spec as that fitted in the HP XW8400 workstation. I'd rather buy Apple branded but it is too expensive.
Can anyone confirm this RAM will be compatible please [it will have the large heat sinks fitted]

Best first stop is macsales.com. They have a guide that asks model/year, and recomends the most compatible (proven by testing) memory and sells at nice prices. For example, the 8 GB upgrade for my system was $200 through Apple but $60 through macsales.
They even have videos and installation guides.

I just checked, and 8GB is $270:00 USD / £171:00 UK Sterling, which is only $50:00 less than if I buy here in the UK 😟

Different part numbers as they have different heat sinks but looks like it's a match; just would like an expert to confirm if possible please
Crucial tracks based on a number of factors.
The large RAM heat sinks are a MUST and not to be ignored.
Macs don't give the opportunity so the SPD really has to be programmed with the proper Mac timing, voltage, latency. ie, not all FBDIMMs which are ECC and same DDR 667 or 800MHz look okay on page only.
Apple memory requires Apple-certified Heat sensors and Apple-certified heat sinks. These are matched to the air flow over the memories in a Mac Pro. Failure to use the right stuff is likely to give premature failure of the RAM.
Okay, thanks everyone for responding, I'll avoid the risk and get saving instead for the "proper" ram
