My girlfriend and I love using iMessage. We both have iPhones and when iMessages can be sent, its faster and more convenient than normal texting. the only thing is it takes forever to send or receive iMessage and it usually sends as text massages which takes about 5x as long!! it's very frustrating and we can't find a way to fix it. any help?

This is not true. iMessage does not require WiFi.
I am experiencing slow sending as well. sometimes it's instantaneous. Other times, it takes minutes to finally send.
I mean a litteral iMessage is faster than sending a normal text. And wifi isn't required. Everyone else that I send iMessages to it works flawlessly. Could the issue be that we are on different carriers?
I'm seeing the same thing, and we're both on AT&T. The progress bar will go quickly to about 90%, then sit there for 20 to 60 seconds. This is even with three bars of cellular AND strong wifi. iPhone 4S, iOS 5.1
iMessage doesn't requires only wifi but also 3G or edge
iMessages are slow to send or only send as text messages
