iPhone 4S mic not always working

I have been having intermittent issues with my iPhone 4S where the mic will stop working for periods of time. I believe it is software related because in the past two occassions, rebooting the phone will fix the issue.

When the mic isn't working, the phone, Siri, and voice notes will all register no sound from the microphone.

Has anyone else had this problem? Is this something that will be fixed in an upcoming update, or do I need to take the hardware in to be replaced?

It sounds like I am having a similar issue. Siri works great at times.

When its working correctly:

When I speak, the graphic microphone level goes up and down, meaning your voice is being registered.

When its not:

I bring up Siri, the level will stay down. If I yell into the mic, I can get it to register, i will see it go up and down just a bit. It seems that the mic is not being activated in speaker phone mode or something like that. As if it needs the mic "boost" on, and it sometimes doesn't activate.

It is pretty frustrating. I have been able to make calls without any problem so far.

I'm not sure how to fix this when it happens. it just seems to fix itself after a min or two.

Hi,

I've just purchased the new iPhone 4S 64gb, but have a problem when using the headphones and speaking to someone on the phone.

I have used two different apple headphones, one which came the iPhone 4S and one from my old iPhone 4.

When using the headphones in a call, after 5 mins the line crackles and you cannot hear anything. I have to remove the headphones and use the phone by putting it next to my ear and then it is fine. I have also put the headphones back in to the phone whilst on the call but still experience the same problem.

I am having the same problem half my calls the person on the other end cannot hear me 4s 32 gig black. Boy this is very frustrating bought the phone from apple. My guess is I will be without a phone if i take it to the store for repair. this really stinks. brand new Phone and it does not work its primary function. I thought this was a problem with Sync in my Raptor but no this is not the issue. it sounds like others are having the same problem.

When I went back to the Apple Store yesterday they hooked the "damaged" phone up to a computer and ran a series of hardware tests. They were able to determine from these tests that the microphone was faulty among other issues. I did not have to plead my case, I did not have to stand there for half an hour waiting for the phone to malfunction.

Funny enough that they replaced my unlocked unit with a locked one. I called Apple Care Support and my case was brought to a third tier specialist who is currently in the process of adding my current phones serial number to the unlocked database. She said she would call me back sometime yesterday. Well, that did not happen and the phone is still locked. But I KNOW Apple will make good on this.

If you are experiencing the microphone/speakerphone issue I would have to recommend that you make a Genius appointment. If your phone is unlocked and you will need a replacement make sure you are vocal about that fact. And make sure you do not walk out of the Apple Store with a locked phone. You can determine this by testing another carriers micro-sim or you can simply plug your new iphone into any mac in the store and go through the visual prompts on the phone until you reach the one that displays the plug into iTunes icons. At which point you should see displayed in iTunes "Congratulations, your iPhone has been unlocked".
