cannot connect to computer

i just bought apple tv. I can connect to the internet and download movies but it cannot connect to my macbook pro. I've reset the apple tv settings and no had no luck. I've looked under preferences in itunes but there is no listing of the apple tv as a device even though both the apple tv and my mac are on the same network with homeshare turned on. When I click on computer is just makes a beep sound and does nothing else. Any suggestions? Thanks.
