Light ticking or crackling from iPhone 4S earpiece when on a call

Hello all,

Received my white 4S on launch day and absolutely love it! However, I've noticed a faint ticking/crackling type of noise coming from the earpiece when I'm on a call. It's not distortion as it stays at the same level regardless of volume. It seems to happen when the screen is turned off by the proximity sensor. Almost sounds like an interference of sorts. I tried turning off wifi on both the phone and my router at home but that didn't solve the problem. Any ideas what this could be? It does go away at times and it seems to be more pronounced when I hold the phone to my left ear oddly enough.

I'll probably just end up bringing it to the Genius Bar when I have the chance but just wanted to see if anyone else has experienced this.

Thanks in advance.

I just spoke to Apple support. Here is how it went.

I was told to do a full restore as new and that if the problem still exsists that would confirm it is a hardware issue and not software related. If it is hardware related I was told I would send the phone in for a replacement with a brand new (NOT a service or refurbished phone).

The big concern is that I already see sveral here that have received replacements that still exhibit the static issue.

I have the same problem. Black 32G. It has always done it. I haven't got a replacement because I heard everyone still has the same problem, and I don't want to go through to trouble until there is some success stories. It absolutely drives me crazy, I put it on speaker it annoys me so much. It seems to do it anytime there is a work load on the processor as mentioned before. Hope apple figures this out ASAP, or I become hard of hearing :/

Ugh. I went today and they swapped out my iPhone 4S 64gb (AT&T) because the night before I bought it I was hearing the crackling sound and it was pretty loud. I turned it off then on and I still kept hearing it. It kinda reminds me of when a Windows based computer is loading. When I got home today with my new unit. I STILL kept on hearing the sound. Before I had the 64gb 4S I had the 32gb 4S. I just paid the difference to get the newer model but I didn't have any problems with my 32gb 4S. I'm startin got regret swapping it out. Hopefully this is just a frimware issure rather than a hardware issue cause that would suck. At least I'm not the only one having the problem.

I'm flipping out.

Ok so Been into apple today and have been given another iPhone 4s no questions asked, which makes me wonder considering this is my second visit for the same problem that there is a fault with all of them. They didn't try a new sim, turning off wifi or anything for that matter. They just gave me another phone same as last time.

I'm a gas engineer by trade and have worked for manufactures and when they have inherent faults in boilers etc that's exactly the way I would be told deal with it. Change part no further testing needed, you always knew what it was before getting there and to stop people making a fuss you just fix it even if it's just for the short term as you know it's gonna happen again, it keeps people from blabbing to press etc.

Anyway on a positive note the new one seems ok for now, I will update when sorry if it goes wrong again!

3rd time lucky I hope
