Q: Light ticking or crackling from iPhone 4S earpiece when on a call

Hello all,

Received my white 4S on launch day and absolutely love it!  However, I've noticed a faint ticking/crackling type of noise coming from the earpiece when I'm on a call. It's not distortion as it stays at the same level regardless of volume.  It seems to happen when the screen is turned off by the proximity sensor.  Almost sounds like an interference of sorts.  I tried turning off wifi on both the phone and my router at home but that didn't solve the problem.  Any ideas what this could be? It does go away at times and it seems to be more pronounced when I hold the phone to my left ear oddly enough.

I'll probably just end up bringing it to the Genius Bar when I have the chance but just wanted to see if anyone else has experienced this.

Thanks in advance.

I think I can confirm that it's a hardware issue my replacement iPhone 4S White doesn't have this problem and it was running IOS 5 when i unboxed it i tried it out no problem then i updated it to 5.1 and no problem at all, My previous 4S had this issue out of the box it was running IOS5 and even after full restore then upgrade to 5.1 the problem was still there! So this means only one thing Hardware!

How long have you had the new one? Wouldn't be the first to report a switch fixed it... only to report back a day later that is hasn't.

Is it manufactured in China ?
I heard there are some made in Brazil or something ...
Interesting .. why is Apple still being "silent" on this problem ...

I have the same problem, whether WIFI is on or off.  Annoying.  My regular iphone 4 never did this.

I've had the same issue. Replaced once so far and the new one has the problem also. Gonna wait a few weeks and go get it replaced again. Maybe the bad ones will be out of the system by then...

    Re: Static in Iphone 4s

Nov 29, 2011 11:36 AM (in response to ollilay)

I went to BGR yesterday and was surprised to see no articles on this issue. So I looked at the editor page and found Zachary epstein and emailed him personally. today there's an article on BGR regarding the issue. That's one person sending one email to one person. Imagine what kind of media attention this would receive if everyone in this forum sent an email. I've included my transaction with mr. Epstein for all those that think I'm making this up. keep at it guys. This isn't acceptable, so we shouldn't accept it! Send your email to an editor today. Feel free to copy and paste what I wrote to mr. Epstein. That seemed to work.

Thanks Luke, I'll definitely check it out.

    All the best,

    -Zach

I was very surprised that I didn't find the above subject on BGR website. I usually find the real electronic scoop here. Anyway, I'm writing to bring some attention to the fact that almost wery iPhone 4s has a crazily annoying static in the earpiece that occurs during calls. it sounds a great deal like your PC on startup. Not conversation-preventing but unacceptable for a 200$ phone that receives such accolades. As you can see by the link on apples forum it effects many iPhones worldwide, and replacements and software updates hasn't helped. It seems hardware related. and although the forum consensus is questioning why apple isn't aware of it, I think theyre very aware. And that the only answer is a recall. Thanks Bgr

I have been meaning to reply for a week or so -  i replaced my "static-y" 4s iphone @ the apple store and the new one has the same issue.  i checked my wife's 4s and it also has the issue.

I really do think its hardware, and that the speaker is not shielded correctly from RF interference.  My old timey 3G never had this problem.

Its very poor engineering on apple's part, and very dissapointing.

    Hey guys,

well, from my experience its is definately a hardware issue.

I have swapped my iPhone4S twice. First time due to random signal loss and second time due to the earpiece issue. The third iPhone 4S i got my hands on, works flawlessly. So in my case the earpiece issue was present in only 1 out of 3 iPhone 4S i have used!

My advice to all fellas here (because I guess in order to be here you consider this bug way too annoying), go and ask for a replacement. I personally don't believe that a future firmware update will solve the issue.

    @Zakkorn:

    I'm on Cosmote (luckyly!)

In Cosmote you retain the right to return and swap your phone with a new one within 3 working days from the day of purchase...

PS have read somewhere that the earpiece issue is a white iPhone exclusivity! I can confirm that. Two blacks: no problem with earpiece, one white: faulty earpiece!!!

Sorry to hear that! Don't know how long it will take to fix the problem (but my biggest concern is whether the technicians will be able to address the problem correctly...)
