    This has been continually getting worse over the past couple of months... I can't use my email, text, calendar, and countless other apps at this point. Pretty much just a phone!


    My phone is to the point where I can't even backup to iTunes because it is "too full".  If I can't back up, will I be able to use your method? Is this all done on the computer, then you re-sync? Do you know which google labs app it was? Any help is much appreciated! Thanks!

    How do you know though, which app each file refers to?

    And how big is abnormally large?


    I have a file called 361a8efb51d0221d65653cd865ef9e83e48a4ff2 that is 123Mb, for example.

    And ddf2961c781856754d9cc5eac46c2820363b9358 is 105 Mb....

    I had this same problem from Dec 2012, had to delete music n some apps so I cld use as the phone slowed down, and battery was being chewed up n had to recharge twice per day.I had previously had 12 gig free on my 32 gig iphone 4. I read all forums on problem, and eventually did a manual backup and then restore and restore from backup. Backup took 15 hrs and restore from backup another 15. Problem was not solved. (I was told that it had a gliche, which caused the 15 hr download problem. ) Rang Apple, but did not solve. Today Spoke to another apple person who was not helpful and they hung up.  Spoke to a Apple supervisor tonight, and did a backup to Icloud, which he checked, and then did a restore and set up as a new phone. I then  went into  on my computer to get stored items onto phone and checked each one to ensure all data was there. After that I then went into my actual phone:-  then settings/icloud and then Mail, contacts, calenders etc, turning each one off and then on and then merge where applicable. I then had to manually, from Itunes, sync apps, music, ringtones, and photos, which didnt take too long. The phone then reverted to how it had been prior to the problem and is working fine. I was told it was a IPSW5 problem , (hope thats right), but thats what the senior tech told me.....I was very concerned about setting up as a new phone, but it wasnt a problem. Hope this helps......

    I have had this same issue for several months now. Tonight after reading your response I did the restore as a new phone. Currently having issues with iCloud restoring my recent backup. I really hope they get this issue resolved. I don't want to upgrade my 4s

    I telephoned Apple and they walked me through it and were really helpful. My phone has been working perfectly since then, but the trick was to set up as a NEW phone and then get everything from Icloud and put it back in the phone. You cld ask for a senior tech as they are the only ones that really know about this problem, the rest of them were not particularly helpful. good luck!!!

    Connect and select iPhone in computer iTunes, what do you see at the bottom of the General tab?

    If the "Other" is more than 1 GB, means you need to restore as new and after that manually sync your content back.

    I ended up calling them today and all is resolved Seems my phone was storing corrupt files. Thanks for the advice!

    I had the same issue and finally found the solution for me.

    I went into Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > Manage Storage > My iPhone

    As I had backed up previously all my pics and had even killed the PhotoStream I saw that my Camera Roll was still showing that it had 3.2Gb of stuff when it should be empty.

    I shut it off and accepted that all data be deleted.

    As soon as that was done I had 3.2Gb freed up and could do a iCloud Backup from the phone.

    No need for resets of Network or anything, although I did that too which after reflection was a error


    I also had a error message (42110) when my iPhone connected to iTunes and removed the SC Folder under C:ProgramData/Apple Computer/iTunes which resolved that issue too

    Okay everyone, my wife was having the issues described above and absolutely refused to restore her phone. So after going through and trying to figure this out on my own i found that she had hundreds of old texts and conversations stored in her phone. I deleted all of her messages but that only cleared up about 1gig of space. Then i started looking at email...... her phone was chocked full of emails. I started with the "sent" email folder which had over 1,000 emails saved in it. I deleted every email i could find and she now has all of her space back... completely got rid of the "other" that was taking up all the space available on her iphone 4s. Hope this helps you out so you wont have to restore your phone...... delete ALL of your old messages and emails in every box. Good luck!

    More than half my storage had been eaten up by "other."  I tried this technique and it worked great.  I haven't dug into anything too deeply to see what "unintended consequences" there might be, but there don't appear to have been any.  Thanks for the simple solution that even a "newbie" could follow.

    After trying everything suggested on this forum I called Apple Tech support who informed me that they were unaware of this issue even though there are 178,000 hits on this thread.  Apple Tech told me they could not troubleshoot the issue unless I called when the error message was displayed.  When I replied "I can't control when the error message appears it just pops up."  They hung up on me.


    I called back (first convo 20 minutes) and this time they told me the same thing, that 178,000 users with the same problem was not significant enough for Apple to know about and maybe I should replace my phone!  When I said I didn't want to replace my phone (it is not even a year old) they hung up on me!  Another 20 minutes wasted.


    I called back a third time and was told the only way to troubleshoot this would be to install I-tunes on my PC because the I cloud backup (which I pay for) is "not adequate" for a full restore and a full restore would be needed to get this problem fixed.  However, I tunes no longer supports Windows XP I would have to upgrade my computer to Windows 8.  When I said I would like to speak to someone about being hung up on two times I was told no executive at Apple beyond tech support would be willing to talk to me.


    This is my first (and it looks like only) Apple product I have ever purchased.  I hear the new Android phones are pretty good so I guess I will have to go that way when I get a new phone. Adios Apple!

    Firstly I had the problem of "other and error messages", I have windows XP and itunes , and have no problems between them. I spoke to a supervisor, (after having some problems with speaking to others previously) and did the full restore which they guided me through, and the problem was solved. Perhaps if you install itunes, tel for a supervisor (explaining previous problems with staff) your problem may be solved.Good luck!!

    When you connect to wifi, does it have to be to your home network that is linked to your itunes acct for this to work? I just tried it but on the wifi at work which isnt synced to my itunes acct. and didnt work.
