I've now realized that this never happens when I have wifi off. So far with wifi off overnight it's always at 100% in the morning. Whether this is an issue with wifi and iCloud backup or just wifi only I don't know but I assume it will be figured out eventually.

There is an easier solution to fully charge the battery

At night -or when you do not need it- plug in your iPhone to the charger , then switch it off

pulling the red tab  on the screen

    and let it charge

The battery will go to 100% and it will last  longer

BTW I found my battery is lasting much longer and does not drain as fast as it was doing before

since I turned off the Time Zone feature - Setting Time Zone function in Locations (under system services).

Well last night I left wifi on overnight but I have iCloud backup off and this morning when I took it off the charger it read 94%. So it's not the iCloud backup per se but some issue with wifi itself or some other process that takes place only when wifi is on. Since I also see a significant battery drain during the day when wifi is on, for now I will leave it off most of the time unless I specifically want to update or download something. Again for me this less than 100% issue has only occurred when wifi was on.

A fix for me was suggested by Hdcrazy on another thread and it seem to have worked,

-Turn of all cloud setting and choose to keep the data on the phone when promted

-Go to the home menu and do a hard reboot

-Then let your phone drain to 0.

It may of course have been a coincidence but the night after doing this I obtained my first full charge and haven't failed to get one since!

Battery life still ***** though! I used 51% with 2.5 hours of usage with 3.25 hours standby the other day!

I mentioned this in another thread, but I really think most of us are seeing a bug in the "show battery percentage"  (maybe just me) But please try this after you do a charge overnight and have the 96% etc...  I think when the phone reaches 100% but the battery % starts its click down, the phone is still charged fully (at least in my case) just the wrong %

Just shut off the phone "slide to power off" then turn it back on and bingo says 100%.

If this works it's just a bug with the "show battery percentage"

And if this is the case why didn't Apple chime in on this?

  • Pappasbike Level 3 Level 3 (560 points)

It's a bug alright but for me it's a bug that only happens when I've left wifi on. If it's off, always 100% when I take it off the charger, no need to turn it off then back on.

so i tried all the things listed in this post and nothing so then i call apple since i have apple care+ and at the very end of the phone call they ask for my credit card # so they can put a $650 hold on my account until they receive the defective product. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? you sent me a product that isnt up to par and now you want to hold $650 until you get it back...every other phone i have had if there was any issue they would send me the replacement next day free of charge with a return shipping label. regardless if they will take the hold off when they get it back i dont have $650 just laying around that i dont need for a couple of days.

Same issues here as everyone. 4s charging overnight, woke up to see only a charge of 97%. Did a powercycle and there was 100%. Strange thing was that within 10 seconds of being on, the phone lost 2% of its power. Besides that, i also posted a topic about the worst standby time ever. My ipad2 with ios 5; no problems there. My 4s atm: 4*****. Discharges 54% in 8 hrs in standby. With only icloud on, but no icloudbackup.

This realy ***. While reading this thread, my phone dropped 7% already...

Hey guys, I have the same exact problem.  It's tough to pin point the problem (whether it is just a "show percentage glitch", or whether it stops charging after reaching 100% and starts using battery, or whether it's charging it to 100% then letting it drop then charging back to 100% making this a loop and damaging the battery).  Let's hope that it's fixed in the next iOS update, so please provide Apple with this feedback by going here:

Mine was stuck at 95% couple of nights ago, now if it's true that it needs to calibrate it self how come it would go to 100% before and after i noticed it get's stuck at 95% sometimes...

I charge my phone every night when I go to bed. I often check my phone thru out the night. After a few hours of charging it hits 100%.  When I finnaly get up its at 93%. I have no running apps in the background.  I have the iPhone4 running ios5. I also experience rapid battery drain when using my device. Lol I just lost 3% writing this post @@

  • Arinar Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

Did the update last night. I'm already seeing much improved battery life. After it fully charged overnight, I left it unplugged for 3 hours without touching it. Battery still at 100%.

  • bernietmac1 Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

I called apple and they told me to just restore to default and then put your backup back on.  I dont think thats gonna work because I have had this problem with my iphone 4 with iOS 5 and after I transfered my info to the iphone 4s i still got the same charging pheonenom. Even after the 5.0.1 update no help.

I get the 2% drop to 98% immediately after unplugging in the morning, as well. My girlfriend and two other friends exactly the same thing --- exactly.

  • SeekerJ Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

I've got router issues at home that I need to take care of before our phones can use WiFi. So we have had our WiFi turned off ever since we got the phones 2 weeks ago, and yet we always get a 2% drop to 98% immediately after unplugging every morning. I ran into two other friends last night that told me they get the exact same thing --- exactly.
