Can I go back to MobileMe?

I upgraded in haste to iCloud. Now, I can't sync anything with my MacBook 10.5.8 and iPhone 3G. Can I go back to MobileMe?

I was happy to pay for MobileMe, I've had an account since it was mac.com, but everything useful has gone with the migration to iCloud. I would really like to go back now, please.

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

This is all about making me buy new hardware. I hate it when Apple does this.

It was your choice to "upgrade in haste" to iCloud (although you couldn't actually do that on your current systems). Apple, nor anyone else held a gun to your head. MobileMe is sticking around until 30th June 2012 - over 8 months away.

Why would you upgrade without knowing what you were upgrading to? It's not like Apple's website isn't full of pages of information about iCloud. If you had done a few minutes of research before rushing to upgrade, you would've found out very quickly that your current hardware and software is not supported with iCloud.

Sorry, but you only have yourself to blame for your current predicament. No-one forced you to upgrade straightaway...

There was nothing in the literature which said my contacts and iCal wouldn't sync at all.

You didn't read this right on the iCloud homepage at: http://www.apple.com/icloud/

"iCloud requires iOS 5 on iPhone 3GS or later, iPod touch (3rd and 4th generation), iPad, or iPad 2; a Mac computer with OS X Lion; "

It's also repeated at the bottom of every subsequent iCloud page. Also, the iCloud Mac OS X 10.7.2 OS update is also only available to Lion users, and the required iOS5 update is only available to iPhone 3GS or later users.

In fact, it says the opposite.

Where does it say that contacts and calendars will continue to sync to Macs and iPhones that don't meet the requirements for iCloud?

There was nothing on there which said I wouldn't be able to send email from other accounts from www.icloud.com

This fact is mentioned in one of Apple's many iCloud Support Articles: MobileMe: About moving to iCloud

So, you've bought all new equipment then?

Nope. I just updated my iMac to OS X 10.7.2 Lion and my iPhone 3GS to iOS 5. Both of which were free updates for me.

MobileMe is going away for good in any case, the exact number of months is as irrelevant as your criticisms of the comments of others.

iCloud does less than MobileMe, how is that an improvement? The loss of support for remote access to my Time Capsule's internal network drive is more than an inconvenience, it was extremely useful for my work. It seems to me that iCloud is a step backward from an end user perspective compared to MobileMe.

Yeah, but there was no immediate need to move to iCloud right away. For all we know Barry may be planning to upgrade his Mac & phone in the next 8 months. In which case, sticking with MobileMe until then would've avoided the predicament he's in now. If not, he's got 8 months to continue with MobileMe while looking for alternatives, instead of being without any syncing as he is right now. The longer he has to investigate alternatives, the happier he's likely to be with his eventual choice.

iCloud also does things MobileMe never did. So, whether it is an improvement or not, depends what features you used. You can't speak for everybody.
