my iphone 4S mirroring isnt working, shows up as black, not white

does anyone have the same issue?

i have an Apple TV 2 plugged in with the latest software update

both my iPhone 4S and my Apple TV are connected to the same network (an airport express router)

i double tap my home button to bring up the tray, then slide to the left twice and access the airplay icon but it only allows me the same features available on the iphone 4. i can only play audio through this icon, there is no option to swich on mirroring

i have siri, i have notification center, i have news stand and all iOS 5 features. why is this one not working??!

note: for some reason my airplay window that pops up when i press the airplay button is BLACK and i have noticed in many of the videos posted online and throughout the web, all those who have demonstrated airplay mirroring have a WHITE background. could this be an indicator of my problem??

also, i have already tried restoring my device to a previous backup.

please help!!!! this is super lame sauce!

any input is appreciated i don't know what to do!

When you select the "apple tv" option, after double tapping to display the tray and swiping left twice and tapping the airplay button, you should see an option to turn on mirroring.

yeah im pretty sure i "should" be seeing that option, but that "mirroring" option with the little slider switch that shows up in everyone elses iphone 4S' and iPad 2's doesnt show up on mine! i've tapped just about everywhere i can possibly think of tapping to try and get it to reveal itself!

note: when i tap on "AppleTV" all it does is place a check mark next to the AppleTV text and tucks the Airplay screen back into the tray

UPDATE:

i think i may have isolated the issue at least partially..

it appears i have Apple TV 2 software version 4.3 but everything online is saying the most recent version is 4.4.1

the problem is, every time i try to update, it says my Apple TV is up to date...

any help??

i've also tried plugging the unit into my comptuer with a USB cable but it doesn't appear in my iTunes source list!

omg! all i want to do is mirror! give me a break!!

Glad to see I'm not the only one having this issue. Every single detail that has been described by thecaseface is something I'm seeing as well. No option for mirroring pops up on my iPhone 4s, and my Apple TV is on version 4.3 as well. I'm getting only audio when I select the Apple TV from the tray.

Hopefully this gets resolved!

HEY GUYS I LOOKED AND ALSO HAVE OLD SOFTWARE SO IV FOUND THIS TO GET IT TO INSTALL THE LATEST AS IT WOULDNT LET ME DO IT THE EASY WAY.

GOT TO SETTINGS, GENERAL, RESET THEN RESTOR AND IT RESTORES THE ATV WHICH IS A LITTLE ANNOYING BUT ALSO INSTALLS THE LATEST SOFTWARE, IM LITTERALLY IN THE MIDDLE OF THIS NOW ILL LET YA KNOW HOW IT GOES, THINGERS CROSSED

I've fixed this exact issue! Apple pulled update 4.4 as well as 4.4.1 from the Apple TV servers due to reports from some users that it was messing up their Apple TV devices.

However, with a micro-B USB cable, you can connect your Apple TV to your PC or Mac. Do this, then pull up iTunes. Click on the Apple TV in the iTunes navigation window, and click "Restore." This restoration will actually update your Apple TV to version 4.4.1.

Once you have done this, plug your Apple TV back into your TV, and pull up the airplay icon on your iPhone 4S. The "mirroring" option that didn't use to appear now will appear as soon as you select Apple TV.

I hope this helps! It worked for me, and I'm mirroring like a champ!

this didnt update me to 4.4.1, i've tried it several times and i still have version 4.3

i talked to an apple TV rep in the wireless department named Josh. he says they pulled the 4.4 update and 4.4.1 and reverted to 4.3 because the latest update has been causing some Apple TV units to crash and need to be replaced in an Apple Store.

for the rest of us who didnt get a working update: it's a waiting game until they release the next update 😟

I have experienced this precise issue as well and it has been driving me crazy. I wish I had been able to find this thread in the beginning. What a pain. The first thing I did was to restore my Apple TV to factory settings to make sure I had the most recent Apple TV update (even though it self reported it was up to date). It actually did seem to be a more recent update. But alas it still didn't work. Then I restored my iPhone 4S thinking that perhaps there were some sort of anomoly in the ios that was installed on the phone. Still didn't work. So now I discover that Apple pulled the software update that allows mirroring to work. I see. At least I know not to devote any more time to solving this issue. Great news.

I can confirm that doing a restore by connecting to your computer/iTunes with a USB works perfectly.
