Q: Unauthorised SMS when Upgrading to iOS 5

Hi,

I've recently upgraded my 3Gs to iOS5 and I found out that during the setup Facetime/iMessage sends an sms to this Apple UK number: 00447786205094, in order to register.

There is no option not to send this sms and it happens quietly in the background; the only reason I noticed is because of the international SMS (I'm in Ireland, so an SMS to the UK is charged at international text rates).

I wonder if anyone knows how to prevent the message being sent in the first place, either my blocking this this number on the phone or by setting an option not to register for Facetime/iMessage.

If anyone's interested here's the link to the customer care message boards ( http://forums.meteor.ie/index.php?showtopic=2545 ) on my mobile operator's site where I originally raised the issue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Ironcorona, I have found the same thing but I am in Australia and it SMS's +44 7860 015 021

This was sent on the day when I upgraded to iOS5. I have found some info saying that whenever you switch on iMessage, it sends the SMS so if you leave it on there is no repeats. There seems to be a set of numbers, not always the same one that gets messaged but for some reason always in the UK.

I am not happy about it either, what else does the OS do in the background that we dont know about...

    Cheers gilfrombrisbane,

That's good info.  The other weird thing that just occured to me is that the iPhone and iPad both have access to iMessage.  But neither can send out texts.

This is insane Apple. You are charging me for multiple international SMS to use iMessage. What are you doing? I have a full data plan and using my phone with Wifi and you are still using an international SMS.

I have been charged for two international SMSs today for using iMessage twice. It would have been cheaper to SMS them instead of using iMessage.

Not a happy camper at the moment.

    Thanks for the post,

I have the same issue. I have been charged for 13 International SMS and I do not send international sms, this started from the day I upgraded to IOS5.

I contacted my service provider and they could not confirm why this occurred however they can confirm that the messages were sent.

The sms charges appear on my Phone Bill but they are not registered on my iPhone. My service provider also confirmed that the numbers are from the UK. They transferred me to Apple and they could not assist and they are not aware of any issues.

    Continueing to investigate!

    Cheers

I was charged International SMS to the UK as well, the same day I updated to IOS5

I just spoke with Apple support who claimed they have never heard of this issue before.

After a I was placed on hold for some time, they said that a silent message should be sent via the handset, and Apple has agreements with the carrier that the SMS will not be billed.

They also said that it has been this way for some time, so it is strange that it is now being charged.

He is unsure if that changes have been made on Apple's side or the carriers side that is causing these SMS to be charged.

I was charged for 16 international sms to this same number (00447786205094). Vodafone had no idea what has happened (or at least so they claim) and the strange thing is that I have 3GS so there is no facetime and obviously it wouldn't make any sense for iOS 5.1 to try to activate facetime!!! Apple? What's your official response on this one?

I'm In Australia as well and all of my family's iPhones have been charged with SMS to UK when we don't send text to overseas. I think it's because of iOS5, Facetime or iMessage. 2 of the iPhones are 3GS so they don't have facetime so I think the sms were due to iOS5. Apple should fix this bug or we will continue to be charged for SMS that we don't even sent.

If you're using a supported carrier, this should not end up charging you. FaceTime uses SMS to tie the phone number into the system. All supported carriers should allow this to pass without a problem. The only time you should run into trouble is using it on an unsupported network.

Today I checked my telephone bill. I found that I was 5 times charged 0,19 cent for some SMS to the number: 00447786205094. In Google I found out its for FaceTime. I have iPhone 3GS and no FaceTime, but I updated to iOS5. This chargings are occuring now regularly, last charge was yesterday. Where this theft is coming from? Who is responsible for it and where do I get the money back? Do I have to stop now using my iPhone? How to stop this?

Where are you and who is your carrier? iMessage, I believe, uses the same servers for authentication.

I'm from Australia and have just encountered the same problem.  I have been on the phone to Optus trying to get credit back as I refuse to pay for international calls I did not know about and was not informed about.  The girl on the phone said it's charged whenever I turn iMessage on or off.  But I haven't done that - it's just been turned on since I got the phone.  However I just read another post elsewhere that says we need to turn off the option Send as SMS (Settings, Messages).  Hopefully that will fix it and I won't be charged anymore.  It also does say under the option that "send as SMS when iMessage is unavailable.  Carrier messaging rates may apply".    By the way I have been searching theses forums and typing this out while being on hold still as I'm insisting I speak to a supervisor as as far as I'm concerned it's robbery.  As soon as Optus realised this was happening they should have informed all iPhone customers.  Been on hold 30 mins now and the silly girl hasn't even actually put me on hold - I can hear everything happening in the call centre!!!!!!!!
