Q: Unauthorised SMS when Upgrading to iOS 5

Hi,

I've recently upgraded my 3Gs to iOS5 and I found out that during the setup Facetime/iMessage sends an sms to this Apple UK number: 00447786205094, in order to register.

There is no option not to send this sms and it happens quietly in the background; the only reason I noticed is because of the international SMS (I'm in Ireland, so an SMS to the UK is charged at international text rates).

I wonder if anyone knows how to prevent the message being sent in the first place, either my blocking this this number on the phone or by setting an option not to register for Facetime/iMessage.

If anyone's interested here's the link to the customer care message boards ( http://forums.meteor.ie/index.php?showtopic=2545 ) on my mobile operator's site where I originally raised the issue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

OK, there is more to this than I realised/remembered. I stand corrected.

However, there are still other aspects to this discussion which are unresolved. One person is claiming that there are only two iMessage activation numbers (or number series) - one in the US and one in the UK. Another person is claiming that there are local activation numbers in every App Store country.

    Which is right?

That I do not know.  I do know that Apple has server farms in various parts of the world, so it may be that the activation number is specific to whichever server/data center is the primary host for iMessage in that area?

Apple has a big data center here in North Carolina, but they've been very quiet about what exactly it is being used for - iCloud, iMessage?  Most likely a number of services.

I can try and find the activation number my iPhone used in my old billing statements, but it may not shed much light on the situation in other parts of the world.

I´m in Sweden and I've been charged for internationel sms to UK 1,20 SEK too. Which I didn't send. When I searched the number (004477862050949) on the Google I come to this page direkt. I don't know what did I do 28/4 on my new iPhone. But in a previous post  here is a tip to close imessage to avoid further charges. When I closed popped upp a massege that it can be charged for it. At least it's not silent.

    My carirrer is: Telia 14.1
