What formats can Apple Pages software save in?

I occasionally get students turning in essays to me in a .pages format, and they typically have no idea how to save or convert a file to another format. Can the Pages software save files as Rich Text Format, or Word (.doc or .docx)? And if it can, which versions of Pages does this apply to? I don't have a Mac, and I'm going to need to communicate with very basic users who have trouble saving documents in a variety of formats. I'm assuming that the Save as... dialog is much the same as in Windows word processors... or isn't it? Are there some simple steps I can give them, to convert the file? Thanks for any help you can give me.

OK, I looked at a link that the forum software gave me, and it answered part of my question: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1237652?answerId=5845161022#5845161022

And so after making a Pages document, I willl tell the student to simply go to the File menu, select Export, and then select the Word or RTF options.

I still have the second question, however--does this refer to all versions of Pages software? Or is this exporting feature one that was added only recently?

OK I see that iWork is the software that makes Pages files, and it has only been around for a couple of years, and has always been able to export to a Word format.

I guess my last question--is there any software, other than iWork, that can make a Pages file? Was there an earlier program Apple used that does this, or is iWork the only one?

I have had Pages since it came out, and this has always applied.

In the current version, select FILE/EXPORT and choose Word Document (or RTF if you prefer). It will also do PDF and ePub formats.

Pages is part if the iWork suite of products. This is somewhat analagous to saying the Word is a member of the Microsoft Office Suite of Products. The other Apps in iWork are Keynote (presentation graphics) and Numbers (spreadsheet).

The iWork Apps used to be sold as a bundle, but now you can buy them separately.

In previous versions of Pages, you would click File/Save As and choose Word as the format. I think back then, you could choose .doc or .docx.

That is based on memory. I haven't had the previous version for a while.

Thanks for the reply. So in iWork, the File/Export isn't always an option, but if it isn't, you can go to File/Save As.

Now is there any other software (other than iWork) that could be making these .pages files, or is this it? I'm trying to cover all the bases; often such communication is via email so I have to be know about this stuff.

Thanks again.

A clarification - iWork is a suite of programs; it is not a program itself. It includes three programs: Pages, for text-based documents; Numbers, for spreadsheet-type documents; and Keynote, for presentations.

The program involved in this instance is Pages.

The predecessor to Pages was AppleWorks. It did not use the .pages format designation.

Unless someone is using a translation utility (one I'm not familiar with), a .pages format document can be created only by Pages.

In OS X Snow Leopard (10.6) and earlier, Pages had a Save As function as well as Export, either of which could be used to generate formats other than .pages - these others included RTF, Word, and PDF.

In OS X Lion (10.7) the Save As function has been done away with. The choices in this version of Pages for saving a document in other than .pages format are -

• Duplicate, which creates a duplicate of the document. When this duplicate is saved the initial time, a choice is offered to save it in Word format (as well as in an older Pages format).

• Export. This function allows the format choices of PDF, Word, RTF, Plain Text, and ePub.
