outlook 2011 import from apple mail

I've follow the Microsoft official instruction to import email from Apple mail to Outlook 2011.

In Outlook menù, from File, choose import, then Information from another application then choose Apple Mail.

But Apple Mail option doesn't appear! only "Qualcom Eudora" or Application not in list....so its impossible to import the message.

What's appen???

thks for any help

Umberto

This is the windows forum, might want to post in the correct one if you want this to be seen by thise not interested in Windows issues, but I'm here so:

After you reach the box that says "my Application not listed here you get this information.

User uploaded file

So export your Mail in one of the formats supported by Outlook and carry on.

I also advise that you not do this, Outlook wll make it very difficult to migrate anywhere else.

thank's a lot csound1.

I know about the other format.

But the question is: why the OFFICIAL instruction say "choose Apple mail" and "Apple mail" option doesn't appear? bug? my wrong settings? wrong instruction? or what?

I'm not interested in workaround, like csv or mbox.

I've more than 9 giga of mail, organized in many subfolders, and i'm very surprise that is not possible to direct import to Outlook 2011 for mac from the default Apple mail reader!

Microsoft wrote the 'official' instruction and in their usual fashion it is wrong, direct migration to Outlook 2011 is only possible from Eudora, so use MBox if you are going to use Outlook.

...I've email in Apple mail and I want export from it to Outlook 2011...

I did a little testing and all I can come up with is the following:

  1. In OSX Mail, select your message and click File, Save As.
    1. Format is Raw Message Source.
    2. Be sure to have a .eml extension at end of the filename.
  2. Open Outlook and drag the message file onto your Inbox (or whatever folder in your Mail.)

Notes:

  1. Outlook must have focus when you drag the message in. IOW, click on Outlook to bring it to the front before dragging the message in.
  2. You must Save As each message individually. Selecting multiple message in OSX Mail, will combine all the messages into one file, which Outlook import as just one message. (And import very badly.)

Of course, it's obviously gonna be a pain importing messages individually, but you asked. 😉

BTW, just to make sure you're fully warned, getting your data out of Outlook later is nearly impossible. Try the Export function in Outlook for Mac and you'll see what I mean. (It's like Hotel California. You can check out anytime you like but you can never leave. 😢 )

I second that emotion 🙂

Any other reasonable email client for osx? I am running moutain lion, and my mail's search index is broken and I dont know how to fix it. So I cannot search any mail even though mail is in the inbox. So I was thinking of going to outlook but after reading this changed my mind. Any options? Or ideas on how to fix broken search?
