iPhone 4s wifi slow.

Purchased the phone on launch day had sluggish wifi issue from straight out the box incidently the misses has an iPhone 4 and all was well upuntil the ios5 install now she has suffered the same sluggish wifi speeds (just under 1mbps ive speed tested on my laptop and am getting 9mbs consistently) instead of running straight to the forums i thought id try and look into the issue via forum reading etc seems the problem was apparent in the 4 as well.

Ive tried every possible remedy i could find, restoring, wiping network settings, changing the dns settings, changing my router to 'b' only the only thing i have not tried is a different router as the one im using (Netgear WGR614v6) doesnt have the ability to use the mode 'N' and have read that could remedy it or wireless connection but with numerous other devices connected without problem i cant see how it would be a factor especially seeing as my partners iPhone 4 is experiencing the same issue after the os upgrade.

If anyone has the same issue or could perhaps point me in another direction i would be very greatful.

same problem here, received my iphone 4s last week - wifi initially worked when i received the phone then suddenly just dropped without any reason.

getting only intermittent connection to the internet, and ONLY and rather bizarrely when I stand next to the router! My 3G connection is definitely faster than wifi connection.

Have tried resetting network settings, resetting ALL settings, restoring ios5 from iTunes, hard reset on the iphone, resetting my router settings/channgels, MAC filtering, rebooting my router - all to no avail. What's even weirder is once I reset my router and connected the iphone 4s temporarily to wifi, it seemed to boot all my other devices off the network!

It's been ******* me off no end since I got the phone - it's a frikkin' joke this is - what's the point of an iphone that won't connect to wifi, especially since most of its functionality depends on wifi???!!!

Have rung Vodafone UK and getting the phone exchanged, just in case it is a faulty handset - but I fear this is something that Apple have messed up on big time - seems to be either an ios5 glitch or a serious hardware problem.

Next time Apple , why don't you test your products before releasing them - we are not Beta testers!!

The mighty 4s has risen. I extremely disapointed with having poor wifi performance. My 3gs was smoking my 4s in download speeds. After a lot of web searching and trial and error, I finally decided to dig into my Linksys router that is about three years old. I entered the IP address into the address bar bringing up my routers settings. At that point it was a matter of just playing with the settings. Under wireless, I hit the manual setting. That brought up a bunch of different options. I started play with the different network modes. First N---nothing noticeable, then B- went from .89 mb to 5-6. Tried G--went to 8-10 mb. Finally the BG mixed brought me in at 12-14 mb. YouTube video is fast and crisp.

I was having all kinds of problems getting my wife's and my new iPhone 4S's to work properly over WiFi. We both upgraded over our old 3G's. After a very frustrating couple of days, I found out what our issue was, and it seems like their are a couple of issues being described here.

1. Slow WiFi

2. Intermittent WiFi

I never checked the speed, but I know that when we first got them opened and setup, I was having both issues. It was slow, then it wouldn't connect to WiFi at all.

What I eventually found, happened to be in the router settings. I have a DIR-655 router from D-Link. I had assigned static IP addresses based on computer (or device) name. When I got the new phones, I never chose the phone's name, iTunes somehow assigned the device names to "Jason's iPhone" and similar with my wife's. This just so happened to be the names of our old phones as well, so as you could imagine, this produced problems when we had the old devices on at the same time. I can't remember at the moment, if I also had locked these down to MAC address, but this presents the bigger issue, since the MAC addresses don't match anymore.

Once the old devices were turned off, the problem presisted, until I deleted those entries in the static IP assignment list, and recreated them. Once I did that, I no longer had issues with either problem listed above, save for the fact that WiFi-N does not travel throughout the house as well like the WiFi-G did. I ended up wiring the living room to our office, so I no longer needed the bridge that was connecting the two. Since that extra device could also be used as an AP, I ended up turning it into one, to extend the range of the WiFi throughout the house.

Anyway, hopefully this will help some people. A lot of times, you set things up in a router, and it remains that way for years, without ever thinking about it again...so you might want to check that, if that is something you tend to mess around with (I assign all devices on my network the address I want them to have, only guest devices get assigned a random range of numbers, if allowed on the network).

On another thread I posted my solution to the slow wifi (not related or concerned with slow 3G)

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3415814?start=45&tstart=0

Post with the proposed fix starts with the date of Nov 3, 2011 8:57 AM EST you can safely ignore the previous posts by me and the other user who was ranting as they are useless and do not contribute.

Be sure to read it thoroughly and follow it "to the letter" Not complicated but all the steps seem to be necessary.

Please post your feedback

Thanks,

Matt

Cliff notes version of my proposed fix (details explained in earlier post dated Nov 3, 2011 8:57 AM EST)

  1. "reset all settings" (settings -> general -> reset -> reset all settings)
  2. on reboot select set phone as new (DO NOT restore from a backup)
  3. Immediately disabled the "setting time zone" (settings -> location services -> system services -> setting time zone (select off))

That's it if on step 2 you perform a full erase that is fine - but if you dont want to set your phone up from scratch (like install apps and music files etc) then "reset all settings" will work. They key is to NOT restore / install a backup because it will reinstall the old configuration files and you will have the wifi problem again

Thanks for your suggestion for a fix its something a little different from the umpteen methods ive alread used and failed with so i thought id give it ago this evening to the letter as stated and still having the same issue.

Im pretty much resigned to the fact im gonna have to wait for apple to rectify the issue with a software update as like i said ive tried everything bar offering a virginal sacrifice to fix the **** thing 🙂.

I believe I found a fix for the users with Linksys Routers. I noticed the same WiFi slowness problem on my 4S but after diagnosing the issue I found that when using my AT&T MiFi device for WiFi I pulled 20+mbps on my iPhone 4S. I re-ran the test on my home (Linksys) WiFi and got 1-2mbps.

I downloaded the latest firmware from Linksys and it fixed the problem for me on my Linksys WiFi connection.

ech0blue, this was also the fix for me. I was consistently getting 0.50Mbps down and >6Mbps up until I updated my Linksys firmware to the latest version. Now I'm getting 11.33Mbps down.

Everyone should also note that I use my work laptop as a gateway to various wired networks that I connect to while traveling. I did this by forming an ad hoc connection from the phone to the laptop and sharing the laptop's wired connection. However, when I got my 4s I could no longer do this as I had done with my 3gs. The fix for this problem was basically identical. I had to update the wireless driver of the laptop to enable an ad hoc connection between laptop and iPhone. The moral of this story is that there is apparently a new protocol or something out there that apple decided to make the phone dependent upon. You should try to make sure you have updated drivers and firmware in anything you are trying to connect to the 4s.
