Aaargh, since I updated itunes to 10.5 on sunday, I got some issues with either itunes or the iphone - can't tell which one is the problem. The update took 4 hours but seemed to work but now the iphone is not recognized as a device and its impossible for me to update to ios 5 😟 Automated update process is interrupted by the alert " can't backup", manual backup is not working either since itunes seems to "hang".

Same problem here. Since upgrading iTunes to 10.5 I cannot upgrade iphone4 to ios5 because iTunes hangs during backup, whether I am attempting to sync or fully upgrade to ios5. Multiple attempts failed. Leaving it overnight failed. Not seeing any solutions to this posted anywhere in this forum. May just be a matter of waiting and trying again later (like a week later). I want ios5 but cannot accept a bricked phone in the process.
i had the same problem with you K1HSL. it hang in backup stage, i leaved it overnight for at least 3 tries, hoping that the backup will be completed. not sure what is happening. also have ipad2, and having same problem
I have the same problem. My iPhone 3GS haven't been able to update since version 4.3.4.
Sorry to hear you are having same problem with 3GS Magnus. Syed I did not realize this was also affecting ipad2. Unfortunately I have an ipad2 also, but I won't attempt the upgrade to ios5 until I can get my iphone4 upgraded to ios5. Looking like it may take a whilenfor that to happen, maybe until iTunes 10.6 comes out. Let's hope not.
ah i see. i am also using iphone 3gs but manages to update it to the latest ios4, but with some diffulties such as download timeout or error. this is the first time that i can't even backup the phone. i think this is minor case as i dont find many people complaining about this and maybe we might have to wait until iTunes 10.6 comes out

This solution has been documented on this forum by several people, but the solution is usually deep in multiple threads. I really don't know who came up with it first, but it does indeed work.
I had an issue with iTunes.exe, APSDaemon, and AppleMobileDeviceHelper.exe using 100% CPU per core. (Showed as 25% in Task Manager.)
I could not backup my iPhone and the CPU spike happened as soon as iTunes 10.5 was started on Windows 7 Home Premium x64.
This solved it.
Sounds stupid but works:
1. Quit iTunes.
2. Start an elevated command prompt (Start Menu -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Right Click "Command Prompt" -> "Run as Administrator")
3. Once in the command prompt, type "netsh winsock reset" and hit ENTER.
4. Reboot your machine.
5. Restart iTunes.
6. ???
7. Profit!
It really worked!!! Thank you so much! Now, Apple needs to find a solution for the home button issue so that everyone will be happy again 😀
I've been having the same problem with my iPhone 4. No matter how many times I try to update to iso5, the whole thing just hangs in backup. I tried the "netsh winsock reset," but that didn't do it. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes, deleting old backups, restarting my phone, etc., but nothing's working. Any advice?
