My cursor sometimes begins acting as if it is an eraser and will erase whatever image is on the screen. The only way to stop this action is to reboot the system. MacBook Pro Running Lion OS.

I have the exact problem. It does not appear to be limited to a particular program and is more common when multiple programs are open.
Multiple programs. Unfortuantely, i don't know all that were running each time the issue occured. Certainly Safari, Mail and iCal and, I believe, Word.
I took the computer in to the local Apple store. The "genius" there thought it was likely the graphics card. They are testing it this week.

I have been told by the genius guys it is a software issue to do with Lion. To stop it happening go to "security & privacy" settings in "system preferences" and untick the box "log out after 5 minutes of inactivity" this has worked for me
