Q: iPhone 4S drops 3G, have to restart phone to get it back

I'm using my iPhone 4S on the O2 (UK) network. I've noticed so far, twice that the iPhone 4S does not show any 3G (or edge even) connection at times. When I restart the phone it picks up a 3G connection immediately.

Anyone faced this issue? I'm not sure if its a carrier issue or something wrong with my hardware?

I have the same problem, my 4S on O2 seems to not be able to connect back to 3G when I get up from the tube. This morning, its taken over 15mins and still no connection. Since turning the phone off, I am now connected.

This has been quite commen lately.

    Any ideas?

And I cannot keep turning my phone on and off everytime I use the tube.

I spoke to O2 support and his advice was that he has to switch his phone on and off daily as well.

This is an iPhone, not a TV, it should be on and connected at all times.....

Not happy, spent alot of money on this and it seems to not be giving me much value right now.

Have you tried a hard reset or a restore? To hard reset hold down the top sleep wake button and the home button at the same time until you see the silver apple. Let it go past the slide to power off, you don't want that.

Or back it up and restore fresh software in iTunes.

Do you have SIM-PIN on  - on you phone?

If you have SIM-PIN on - try to disable it (You might need to boot the phone first) and see if that makes a difference.

On My Iphone 4 it is now connecing automatically again (with SIM-PIN off).

    Settings - Phone - PIN

    HI,

Thanks for the tips. I have hard reset it previously, but cannot keep doing that everytime.

I will try the SIM PIN and see what happens.

    Thanks

    Hi!

On page 7 I told that I was going to drain the battery and then use the app Battery Doctor, and let it "trickle charge" over night. I did this yesterday!

I got up at around 7.30 in the morning (100%) and started to read some news and mail and watched a small youtube video. Started a radio app on airplay, and let it play during shower. Then got out of the house with audio app playing when going to the office.

I noticed the 100% stayed quite a long time while doing some of the forementioned things, but started to drop. When I got to the office, I was down at 95%.

During office hours, I had a few calls and surfed the net and checking out a few apps.

After work (around 16.00) I was down at 85%.

Then listening to audio while I got to the gym. At the gym, more audio and updating RunKeeper; use for about 1.5 hours.

When I got home at about 18.30, I checked Usage settings, and it told me usage 5H 47M, and my battery was at 67%.

When I got to bed I think it was down at 50-something%. I think this is better than before the use of Battery Doctor, but it could be "placebo", but I hope it´s getting better.

During the day, I had fiddled with the sim pin again, and this made it drop connections again, even the WiFi! Had to do restarts. Going to disable pin via another phone again, since this worked for me earlier.

Recent news claims there is in fact just a software problem, so I hope Apple pushes another update as soon as possible after locating the bugs!

On one occasion, my iPhone 4S was having 3G issues even though I had the 3G icon on my phone. I couldn't figure out why my phone was having this issue. I attempted to hard reset a few times and it didn't work. What ended up working for me was turning on and off Airplane mode. I haven't had any issues since.

My wife's iPhone 4S on the other hand has had the 3G issue twice now. Both times turning Airplane mode on and then off has resolved the issue.

I hope this is not an on going issue but it sounds like it might be.....I'm super glad now that I purchased applecare+ for both mine and my wife's phone.

Do you have SIM-PIN on  - on you phone?

P.S.  It is great that  you are able to purchase Apple Care Plan for your iPhone, i.e. this service is not available in Scandinavia for  iPhones.

I think it´s really strange, but every 1-2 days, both 3G (+Edge) and Wifi will still show in the menu as active, but is not working – no net for me!

Has to restart to get connected again! Extremely annoying!

And while my battery seems to last longer than for others, I think a drain of 5% during morning hours is quite more than my iPhone 4. I hope the release of 5.02 is ready soon. Rumor says it´s gonna be out this week. I´d like it as soon as possible.

I really like my new iPhone 4S, but I didn´t pay up an unlocked phone to not receive calls!

I feel to return my phone if the next update doesn´t solve the problem...

    Having the same problem!

    iPhone 4S

    AT&T California (Los Angeles)

    Strong signal w/3G icon

    No data connection!

When I restart the phone, it works again. This has happened multiple times.

I've only had the phone for about a week. Should I return it? Or wait for an official acknowledgment from Apple? It's okay if it will take a few weeks to fix via a software update.. I just want to know it's a software problem and not a hardware problem.

Ok, 10 days on and I have to say I have not had this issue since following the instruction from apple care.

For those that are having this issue have you tried the solution and did it resolve it?

I started "fresh" when I got the phone, but downloaded my backup from the iCloud. I need my old stuff...

Apple has released the beta of 5.1 to developers, and I hope they won´t use too long time until it´s ready as an OTA update. Fingers crossed it will iron out our problems!

Same thing in Belgium with Proximus 3G on my IPhone 4S

I need to reboot my phone to get it working, then it works, then I use wifi and then it doesn't work anymore,

    reboot again..

I've seen this only after my IOS5.01 upgrade; not before

So IOS 5.01 = battery problem "kind of fixed" but "messed up 3G"

I was getting stuck in No Service mode so ATT just gave me a new SIM to try. If that doesn't work, then I have to go to an Apple Store for a replacement. I am not that close to one so that will be a pain if it comes to that.
