1 icloud account on 2 phones....delete one?

have 2 iphones, mine and husbands. icloud account is on both phones , so can I delete mine without it affecting his? My contacts are now on his phone and his contacts have disappeared.If I get shot of icloud altogether on my phone, when I sync to itunes for updates...will all be well?
