I'm using OS X lion 10.7.2 and the search function within the Address Book (v6.1) has stopped working.
Also, when I click on a contact listed on the left, the detail of that contact does not appear on the right.
However, if I double-click on a contact on the left the correct details do pop up in a new window.
Anyone know the fix for this?

I found the following worked.
Delete the file in
User>Library>Application support>Address book>'AddressBook-v22.abcddb'
or similar fine name
I found I also had to disable BusySync.
This allowed me to search and open cards again.
However, am still having irritating problems with duplicate cards.

Sorry, should have said that you should quit Address book before doing this and also back it up by
File>Export Address Book Archive
And put it somewhere you can find it.

Thanks for these responses Shiela but I think you are using an older OS. Mac OS X Lion does not have a Library folder in the Users area. And I cannot find a file called AddressBook-v22.abcddb (or similar) anywhere.

Lion does indeed have a Library folder - it is now hidden by default. From the Finder, hold down Option while using the Go menu.
I am using the latest version of Lion. Did you try a search for the file with Spotlight?
Thanks for your help. I found the hidden Library folder - sneeky! But I'm afraid deleting the AddressBook-v22.abcddb did not work. After trying that I deleted both this file and the Configuration.plist to see if that worked but no luck I'm afraid.
Any other suggestions?

Simon - Are you using iCloud and syncing your Contacts? I an similar issue that sounds just like yours:
If you are syncing with iCloud, try this.
This worked for me - hope it helps.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed here. Shep's answer worked. In fact step 3 fixed the problem immediately and I have decided not to turn iCloud back on for contacts. I'm in Zambia and my internet connection isn't always brilliant and I guess this may be a factor.
I have now gone into iTunes and turned sync back on for contacts in there and ignored the messages saying I don't need to because iCloud is already doing it (which it no longer is!).

I've had this problem twice in the past few weeks. Today, deleting <AddressBook-v22.abcddb> worked.
Before that, I had deleted all the variations of <AddressBookMe.plist> from Preferences, didn't change the problems of display and search. Then I repaired permissions from Disk Utility, and Address Book didn't work properly after that either.
I am reticent to turn off syncing with iCloud as the past few days have seen very poor internet speeds at my house. Perhaps that's a hint - something not completing a sync due to on/off internet service.
Please everyone keep posting your experience of this. Hopefully we'll find a good solution.

I originated this thread and since I switched off iCloud sync everything has worked fine. I'm in Zambia most of the time where the internet connection can be poor so I think you may have hit the nail on the head when you say that this problem occurs when your internet connection is poor.
