after updating to ios5, my music app crashes my phone

Before updating my iPhone 3Gs, my iPod app worked fine both in the app screen directly and from the lock screen. Now, after the new iOS5 update has been applied, whenever I use the new music app for an extended period of time, the music starts glitching and it crashes the iPhone causing it to reboot. Does anyone have any idea what's going on? All the music on my iPhone has been purchased and uploaded to my phone via iTunes so there are no outside sources that the music files came from and thus no possible corrupt data. I'm confused.

I have actually since found a solution to my problem and now have a pretty seamless iphone 3gs running iOS5. The problem turned out to be what appears to be some faulty album information in one o my albums. Lord only knows what exact part of the album was faulty but either way it's fixed now. I discovered said faulty album by merely systematically navigating to each song in my library until my iPhone crashed. Once i found one song that caused it to die, i checked the other songs in the album. Turns out the whole album caused. My iPhone to crash. I deleted the album out of y library and now everything is working just the way it's supposed to. So it is likely you guys are also experiencing a similar issue with possible faulty ir corrupt song data. I would go through at some point and check out every song you have installed to your phone and see if you can weed out the bad songs.

About the seemingly misplaced album art, i had that issue as well for a long time i was working with a pc that was running windows xp at the time. I recently switched over to a mac mini as my source to sync my phone with and now all my album art work is right as rain. I'v heard this is a common occurence among pc users and i would be willing to bet that if you can get your paws on a mac and sync it up with a mac, all your albins will look the way they're supposed to.

By the way just incase there is one specific album that is causing th problem, the devious album on mine was was one of the EPs released by Skrillex. I actually went to itunes to doublecheck what the album name was and it's actually been removed. This may actually be what caused the iPhone failure. But anyway if you have that EP that has songs like weekends and f***ing die on it then that'ms the one i'm talking about.

Hope this helps.

I have no solution. My wife and I each have a 3Gs and both have similar problems:

(1) Force quitting the music app doesn't guarantee it will work on restart;

(2) A soft reboot (lock/power button only) doesn't guarantee it will work on restart;

(3) A hard reboot (press & hold power button and the home button until Apple symbol appears) sometimes helps, but not for long.

Foward; Rewind; Pause; Play; Shuffle, etc. all appear to work but have no effect on getting music to play: the time stamp shows 0:00.

This is an iOS 5 problem on this device. Thus far my new 4S does NOT have this problem.

I have read that the CoverFlow view causes issues (on iPod Touch) and my wife has noticed the incorrect album covers when the music is playing.

I haven't downloaded any new songs since upgrading and this happens to me too. My phone even became totally unresponsive for almost an hour. I took it to the Appke store, and even though they thought it was a software problem, they offered to swap the phone (I have AppleCare). I think it's a bug in iOS5, and am hoping it gets fixed in the first update. I really miss being able to play music reliably. It has also crashed on podcasts, which makes me doubt the bad song data theory even more.

@jenniwon,

I would go to iTunes and make sure that the items are still available for sale and download. If they are, then maybe it's possible that the reset of the phone after installing the iOS5 just accidentally screwed up the files that were installed on your phone prior to the update. If the songs/items/podcasts are still on sale and you have purchased them in the past, I would delete them off your phone. Once they're all off your phone, try to resync it to your computer and essentially reinstall those files. That might do it. If you try this, please let us know how it turns out.

As much as I'd like to believe this approach, my wife says that regardless of which songs are played, the pattern on her 3GS seems to be play two songs, then freeze/crash. When she gets music to run again, it plays two songs (different), then it freezes/crashes.

My 3GS seems to be similar, though the pattern isn't as obvious: there's no indicator which song will make it freeze / crash. Sometimes a song can be played through without incident. Other times, the Music app stops right after playing the same song.

Any other suggestions are certainly appreciated.

I am pretty convinced that this is a bug. There are several threads about the problem here and I have seen discussion of it on twitter too. I have thousands of songs on my phone, and none are new downloads. I have downloaded some new podcasts from iTunes, but these are feeds that have always worked before. Except in extreme cases, a song should not be allowed by the OS to crash the app (or the phone).

I have discovered what is causing the issue on my wife's 3GS! The Music app will randomly stop playing a song if the album cover is unavailble an image in Coverflow view.

So, to prevent the crash, she is going to create a playlist with songs that have album images. Although this isn't preferable, she hopes it will let her exercise without fidgeting with the irritating crash.

Again, my new 4S has not experienced this issue, but anyone who is experiencing a Music app freeze may want to consider deleting or not playing songs without an album cover picture. 😉

I have the exact same problem with my 3GS only it happens when I am trying to surf iTunes with my phone. It never happens when I am just playing music already on my phone. It took me about 6 hard reboots to get it up and running - thought I would never get it going. Only happened for the 1st time today - never a problem before iOS5 update. It is really starting to drive me mental!

Hello everyone out there

I am using my iphone music app to listen to about 2-3 one hour lectures daily.

Needless to say that when this music app crashes at the xx minute and I have to search that point it is EXTREMLY annoying.

I read through various posts here.

I have tried a few of the things.

None worked.

This morning I noticed that the app crache consistantly if I just start rotating my 3gs.

So I tried locking the rotation. And? Walla. No crashes since.

Apple should fix that but for now my eyes can wander off the time bar and I can listen peacefully to the lectures:)
