Wired Linksys Router and 2 macs

Hello everyone,

I have a B&W G3 and a 12" Powerbook and I bought a wired router thinking that it was going to be simple to set up but to my dismay it not. I have my modem going to the router and I have one cable going from the router to the G3 "or" the powerbook, that works fine but whenever I want to use the sencond computer at the same time both computers go off. I tried both of the cables and they both gave me the same result. I called customer support but they didn't know anything and they said it was the apple computers. I just hung up then because I was furiated.

I don't have a pc anywhere in this house and I plan to keep it that way. I was just wonder if there is a setting I need to change on one of the computers I have both of them set to automatic.

Thank you for any help that anybody may offer,
Kenny

When both computers "go off" I take it that neither one of them can use the network?

Things to check: go to the Network in System Preferences, there should be a small round light if you will - it will be red, not working, yellow - almost working, or green up and running. What color are the lights when both computers are on?

Also, check to see what IP addresses they have. It almost sounds like they are trying to use the same IP in which case, neither will work.

What type of router do you have? Is it wired and wireless, or just wired?

Both computers get a different IP address. The system preferences give me the green light and says that I am connected to the internet. The problem that I seem to be having now is that the computers will hook up to the router and say that they are both connected, they have seperate IPs and they will open the safari page and look like its loading but never does until 5 minutes later it says I'm not connected.

The router is a Linksys wired router only. The internet will work via the modem directly. I called linksys support and got somebody that was willing to help (Thank you) and we were on the phone for 30 minutes and they could not come to a conclusion other than that it must've been the modem. I had a problem with the modem when I first got it and but since then it has been working ok and that was about 5 or 6 months ago.
