I have no sound after iOS 5 update

So here is the problem...

iOS 5 is released, great! I download install backup etc. everything is still great and iOS 5 is working perfectly. Two days later I lose all sound. No audio playback, no button noises, no locking click... Nothing. The volume buttons on the side of the phone no longer work, if I try to play a video or song there is no audio, nor is there a volume bar to slide the volume up and down even as the song/video plays. Weird. What's worse I don't even know when people are ringing me.

Ways I have tried to resolve the issue:

Switching the silent switch on and off a few of times. Turning off the phone. Restart, all unsuccessful. Then I tried restoring factory settings, still no sound. Finally I bit the bullet and did a restore via iTunes. This also did not work at first. Then and hour later sound begun to work again??? Success? No two days later guess what happend again. No sound. I had a play with the cloud settings this time and decided to turn off the OTA (over the air) back up to iCloud feature, an hour later sound??? Weird.

19th October 2011 (this evening) I lost sound again for no apparent reason. Can't be sure if it is or is not a hardware problem or software issue as during the writing of this topic the sound has come and gone three times. I have sent an email to Apple customer services detailing the issue stated above along with my direct contact details and the request for any advice on the issue but as of yet I have received no reply. That was two days ago.

If any body has the same problem could you simply post "same"

If you have found a resolution please feel free to use as much detail as possible to describe what the underlining fault is, and if at all; there is a way to rectify it.

Same here. I noticed the problem when I was taking a picture with the camera and I didn't hear the usual camera sound.

- I couldn't listen to any audio using Music app using built-in speakers. Volume control is not visible.

I read another thread about an issue with a setting (see below) not working...

Sounds > Ringer and Alerts > Change with Buttons.

It was ON. I turned it OFF and strangely everything worked fine!

- I can now listen to my podcasts via Music app.

- It works for other apps (i.e. Net radio app) too.

Issue solved!

p.s. For those who wanted a way to make the camera take pictures quietly, this bug is a 'feature'!

I've been battling the same issue since I updated on 10/13.

Here's what I know and have tried:

  • Sounds and volume controls work with headphones or Bluetooth connection
  • Sound will work when I manually adjust the Ringers and Alerts slider in Settings>Sounds
  • Sound will work while in speakerphone mode (additional sounds from apps and the keyboard will play, too, when on a call over speakerphone)
  • I can adjust the speaker volume slider bar with the buttons, but only after I have first adjusted the slider on the screen. It does not play the sound when adjusting up and down with the buttons, but the slider does move
  • Occasionally, sound (ringer, keyboard click) will play out-of-the-blue, but then will not work right afterwards.
  • I have tried inserting the Apple headphones and removing a few times to see if I could "release" headphone mode - nothing.
  • I have tried compressed air to help release any debris - nothing
  • I have erased and reset my phone, then restored - nothing

This is maddening. I use my phone (iPhone 4) for pretty much everything from music, streaming podcasts, gaming, email, sms, etc... just like everyone. You realize how frustrating it is not to have any sound - really quickly.

This is clearly an ios5 software issue.

Hi! I have also noticed this bug on my iPhone 4 after updating to iOS5. Over earphones everything works correctly but over the internal speakers, it sometimes doesn't work😠

Sometimes it works after an indefinite time again or if I put in the earphones for more than a minute and than unpin the earphones😕. Hopefully Apple fix this bug in the next update…

You may only need to delete and reinstall an app or two.

I had the same trouble, in this case, sounds within Words with Friends stopped abruptly. (They were initially present after the iOS update.) Sounds within other apps and generally on the iPad were fine.

Toggling sounds in Settings didn't help, neither did rebooting the iPad. Deleting and re-installing Words with Friends resolved the issue for me.

Same thing here.

Can't belive Apple didn't issue a single word about it. This is affecting lots of users around the World, including iPad users...

I heard that they are working on the battery issue on iPhone4S + iOS 5.0.1 (a beta version has been just released). Hope they include a fix to this annoying bug...

Volume buttons do work, and sound comes and goes according to the "will" of the operating system.
