I have no sound after iOS 5 update

So here is the problem...

iOS 5 is released, great! I download install backup etc. everything is still great and iOS 5 is working perfectly. Two days later I lose all sound. No audio playback, no button noises, no locking click... Nothing. The volume buttons on the side of the phone no longer work, if I try to play a video or song there is no audio, nor is there a volume bar to slide the volume up and down even as the song/video plays. Weird. What's worse I don't even know when people are ringing me.

Ways I have tried to resolve the issue:

Switching the silent switch on and off a few of times. Turning off the phone. Restart, all unsuccessful. Then I tried restoring factory settings, still no sound. Finally I bit the bullet and did a restore via iTunes. This also did not work at first. Then and hour later sound begun to work again??? Success? No two days later guess what happend again. No sound. I had a play with the cloud settings this time and decided to turn off the OTA (over the air) back up to iCloud feature, an hour later sound??? Weird.

19th October 2011 (this evening) I lost sound again for no apparent reason. Can't be sure if it is or is not a hardware problem or software issue as during the writing of this topic the sound has come and gone three times. I have sent an email to Apple customer services detailing the issue stated above along with my direct contact details and the request for any advice on the issue but as of yet I have received no reply. That was two days ago.

If any body has the same problem could you simply post "same"

If you have found a resolution please feel free to use as much detail as possible to describe what the underlining fault is, and if at all; there is a way to rectify it.

Hi, thanks for the advice but you cannot change this setting on iPhone 4 iOS 5. I don't know if you could before the update but you deffinately can't now.

Judging by the ammount of hits in under 12 hours, the two replies and the fact that some body has blogged about it sounds like its a common issue.

Keep the replies and solutions comming as this problem is still not fixed.

Sorry. Google sent me directly to this page. Didn't notice you had posted under iPhone. If your applecare has expired and you can no longer call for free, go to your nearest Apple store and show it to the genius bar (they won't charge you) and mention how the same issue exists on some iPad (first gen) devices, and how toggling the screen-lock/mute option in the Settings app fixed it. It may help them figure out how to resolve it on the phone. Good luck.

Same here. It's pretty much ********, I've called and spoken with Apple on the phone, ran the troubleshooting, did all the reset/restore/blah blah things, nothing. I have no sound on my apps, no sound on my keyboard clicks, no sound doing anything. My volume sliders have all dissapeared, my volume keys on the side don't work at all. Just garbage.

Apple told me my unit (4S) is most likely faulty, and that I should go back to my carrier and get a new one. Should be fun, seeing as how they're limited in stock and it'll probably be quite some time until I can get a replacement. Gah.

I have no sound through the speaker since updating to ios5, but when I plug in headphones and then unplug them and replug them I can get sound through headphones.

Volume bars are all missing without headphones. I can get ringer sound though, if I change my ringer volume I regain the volume bar for a split second.

This is a total pain, because the speaker is useless for music/games/videos/etc.

Just as a little update for everyone, I went to my carrier today (which apparently they don't do exchanges) and gave Apple a call while I was in there with them. We worked out that Im going to just send my iPhone back to Apple for an exchange (the standard exchange the supervisor was calling it, 5 day wait time, brand new hardware). Apparently this is a hardware issue, not a bug in the iOS5 and this is the only fix. Wahhh wahhh. 😟
