That can only be done IF the magazine meets the following:
1. The publisher has implented changes to their app to use Newsstand.
2. Apple has given specific permission for the magazine to be in Newsstand.
3. The magazine is not available from a Newsstand competing app like Zinio.
The last may change but at least one magazine was told they could not be in Newsstand and Zinio at the same time. However, they are negotiating with Apple on this point.
This is really such a shame. I used to keep both the NYT and the WSJ on my dock for ease of use. Now, with no input from me, my NYT appears in newsstand, and the WSJ does not. To read them now, I have an extra step for the NYT. And I lose all the elegance of having my favorite newpapers appear on screen in a consistent manner.
With newsstand, Apple has degraded both the functionality and the design of the product. Feels like something one of its competitors would do, and contrary to the whole Apple ethos.
Really very disappointing.
Potential fixes:
1) Give us control of newsstand. Use if I want, delete if it I prefer.
2) Allow us to take publications OUT of newsstand.
3) Allow us to move publications INTO newstand.
As it is, it's just a mess, and not an upgrade at all.
I am equally puzzled. I have the New Yorker app on my iPad but it is neither visible on the app screen with its logo nor shown in the newsstand. It is found only by the search function. I would like it in newsstand with auto updates. Any ideas or explanation? I can't even find it to delete and then reinstall!
I'm having the same problem as Karlsf
I agree completely with everything you said. It is so un-Apple like.
I had my news subscriptions all in one folder and would like to keep them that way. I don't need a silly bookcase app that I can't get rid of.
PLEASE, APPLE GIVE US THE OPTION TO DELETE NEWSSTAND!
As far as I can tell, Newsstand's sole purpose is to help Apple control its revenue stream from subscription services. There is no benefit to the user whatsoever.
I just got my iPad today and am trying to remove NYT from the newsstand. I agree with everyone on this post...this is AWFUL!!! Will probably delete NYT and use other news apps that don't force you into this nonsense!
You can't remove an app from the Newstand once it's placed in there. If the app is programmed to be placed in there, then there's nothing you can do about it (except delete it, if it bothers you that much).
Just started playing with my iPad three hours ago and look how fast I discovered this problem! Anyway I WANT all my magazines and newspapers on the newsstand...it pains me that I can't use it properly.
Only thing we can do is hope this gets changed in the next iOS update. I resisted the 5.x update on my iPad1 for many months, mainly because of problems chronicled here in the discussion groups. Finally did update to 5.01 and see that the Times app was pulled out of the folder I'd created for all my news sites -- Wash Post, CBS, BBC, AP, etc. Can't get the Times out of Newsstand and can't get the other ones in there.

It could not have been "many months" as iOS 5 was released barely three months ago (12 October).
iOS 5.01 was released only a month after that.
Thank you, Mr. Pedant; I'm definitely adding you to my "helpful commenters" list.
Thank you so very much!
Glad to see my efforts are not wasted and EVERYONE is using my posts as intended.
Since you posted incorrect info, even if it was a "pedantic" issue, we should therefore take all of your posts as incorrect?
Hmmm....Either there's a sarcasm disconnect here, or some meta-sarcasm going on.
Only thing we can do is hope this gets changed in the next iOS update.
I wouldn't count on that change happening anytime soon... :-)
