How do I get both video and audio on my TV?

I am trying to connect my MBP to my TV. I have a mini display/HDMI cable running from the MBP to my Sony Bravia. For sound I have a cable from MBP headphone jack to RCA on TV.

Here is the weird thing, I get a picture by using the Sony Video 6 setting, but get no sound. If I switch to Vide 2, I get sound, but no video. How do I get both at the same time?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

HDMI audio is not a "default".

Ensure the TV is connected, so the MBP can "see" it.

System Preferences > Sound > Output. TV should be an option.

Others have reported issues if you ALSO have something connected on the audio jack, as the two connection confuse MBP. HDMI connection, set preferences. No other sound device on the "out" port.

MBPs made before April 2010 don't output any audio signal through the mini-Displayport, so if you have an earlier one, you must run a separate audio cable from the headphone port to your TV. When you do that, there's probably a particular HDMI port on the TV that you must use for the video signal, because that port expects not to receive audio and allows the audio to be fed separately. You'll have to see the TV's manual for instructions about which HDMI port to use and what input settings to choose in the TV's menu system. When you have things set up correctly on that end, you should be able to select the TV, or something that represents the TV, in the output tab of Sound Prefs on the MBP.

If you have a recent MBP that does output audio via its mini-Displayport, check the TV's manual to see whether there's a particular HDMI input port you should use.

you need to put the audio jacks in a reciever. unless your tv has an area that has PC with two audio inputs, which is usually dvi or vga.

if you have a stereo with aux in this is also a good option.

We are assuming you're using a later MBP model that didn't support audio via hdmi

HDMI is all digital, so your tv will not connected the analog RCA to the digital HDMI unless of course it supports it.

The audio jack also supports Toslink optical out which is digital and a lot of tvs have. you may want to try this too. optical audio cables you would need:

notice the mini toslink connector that looks like an 1/8" jack.
