E-mail error 3260 again

A previously reported error (on Jan 15th) has returned.
When I try to retrieve e-mails from my account I get "error 3260" displayed and am consequently unable to retrieve any e-mails.
Does anyone know what this signifies?
I use Interner Explorer but am not sure which version.
Any help is appreciated.

Hi Don,
To access e-mails I use the following procedure.
I go into Internet Explorer and, as you said, click on the mail icon in the tool bar which opens up Outlook Express.
I then click the send and receive button.
A little cicular arrow revolves in the bottom right hand corner of the screen for a while.
The error message then appears on the screen.
I hope that this explains my current plight.
Regards,
Jenny.

Hi, Jenny -

Okay. The problem is with Outlook Express, and is often caused by bloated archive database files.

Try this - with Outlook Express not running, hold down the Option key when clicking on the Mail icon in IE, or when starting Outlook Express directly (by double-clicking its program icon). This will bring up a message asking if you want to compact the database files - click OK. This will create new database files containing the old data; the old database files can then be thrown away.

Something to note - when an email is downloaded in OE, it is added to the database files; when the message is deleted the database files do not shrink. This is especially bothersome when there are attachments to the email messages. If you've extracted an attachement to your desktop or elsewhere, you can then remove it from the email it came with. When you compress the database files, space won;t then be taken up by redundant copies of attachments.

Also, if you have not yet done so, increase the Preferred memory allocation for Outlook Express, and for Internet Explorer, too. Adding 20 or 30 thousand to the original Preferred amount is not excessive.

Hi Don,
Well, I've compacted the database files as suggested.
Following this I went into Sherlock 2 to locate the "old database" and "old messages" files which have now been thrown away.
Whilst I was in Shelock 2 I located IE and OE, (which is version 5 by the way), in order to access Get Info > memory to assign more memory.
The computer has been restarted since to make sure that the increased memory allocation would be OK and it seems to have accepted the changes made.
As a bonus I've reinstalled the internet barrier software again and am currently receving e-mails without a hitch.
I just wanted to say thank you very much for your assistance in this matter, it is very much appreciated.
Best wishes,
Jenny.
