Q: *Important--iPhone4s Static/Crackling Noise

All,

There seems to be an increasing number of complaints coming in of iPhone 4s static/crackling noise coming from the phone when placing calls.  I personally had the same problem on an iPhone received 10/14.  Replacement devices seem to be having similar problems.  Here are the following symptoms:

-Very intrusive and abnormal crackling/static noise can be heard through the ear piece while on a call. More obvious in a quiet room.

-When call ends, the sound can STILL be heard coming from the back of the phone. Which means the source of the noise may be coming from there?

-Atleast one person noted that the noise can be stopped by shorting out the signal by placing hand over two top antenna bands forcing a "switch".

-Replacement devices are having same symptoms.

Is anyone NOT having the the symptoms described on the new iPhone4S?

iPhone 4, iOS 5

I'm having the same exact issue, both with my original and my replacement, apple store claimed its a device wide issue because the phone may be picking up too much background noise, I think he just didn't want to give me a third replacement. iPhone 4s white 64gb, AT&T ..

Don't think a third replacement will change anything ... All 4S seem to have this issue and people begin to hear this static noise. They really have to fix it quickly !

Can anyone confirm if they have a phone that does not have these symptoms?

The problem you have is that people who do not have the problem do not come to a technical support board for people with problems.......

As four million of these phones were sold in the first weekend, and I do not see a representative proportion of them complaining of the problem here, my guess is that the problem is not universal. But I do not deny that you have the problem, of course. My guess is that several million phones cannot be made without some displaying faults. I would hang in there with Apple until you get a good one.

I have the same problem. Also, both people I called told me I sounded strange.  I just got the iPhone last night, FWIW 64GB white.

Can someone with the problem try simply recording a Voice Memo and then playing it back?

And, PS, nothing to do with background noise, I was in absolutely quiet room.

Same issue here on what I thought was my first flawless iPhone. I was in my home office on an interview call and started hearing the noise. When I was done I googled the issue and ended up here.

This is a terrible sound in the earpiece while in a conversation.

I've had my 4S since launch day here in the US and I am positive this issue just began today for me. This phone is otherwise perfect and there was ZERO static background noise until today. What in the **** changed??

Me and my girlfriend both got 4S's at the same time. Hers is on a Canadian carrier called Bell, mine is with Telus. Her phone does not have any of the crackling noise. My phone, whenever I made a call, would create a horrendus crackling through the earpiece before connecting the call. Sometimes, the caller would not be able to hear me. I also experienced the same crackling as everyone during a call, and even had to hang up a few times because it got so bad. I called my provider for an unrelated issue, but was able to demonstrate the issue to the tech. She had never heard of this, but suggested it might be a SIM Card or Hardware issue. I was inclined to agree. So after I got off the phone I proceeded to remove and replace my SIM. At first I turned my phone off, took it out, booted up the phone, and replaced it. The noise was now even louder than before. !@#$! So, I took it out again with the phone on, blew in the SIM slot, and ensured that the SIM stayed completely in the tray when inserting it. Voila, no more static. I suggest everyone give this a try before blowing up Apple. It could be you're SIM's were hastily inserted and causing some kind of short out interference. Hope this helps someone else!

TLDR: Take out your SIM Card with the phone on, blow in the SIM slot, and ensure that the SIM stays completely in place and in the tray when inserting it. I suggest everyone give this a try before blowing up Apple. It could be you're SIM's were hastily inserted and causing some kind of short out interference. Hope this helps someone else!

The sound seems to stop for me when I disable Siri. Can anyone else try this to confirm?

Having the same problems here (England) on Vodafone UK network, using 4S 16GB Black. Tried disabiling Siri and re-seating SIM - no change. Symptom's don't sound quite as severe as some describe, but bad enough that I want to avoid making calls from phone. I'm experiencing reverberation with light static crackle when sound comes through and light static crackle when line is on a call but silent, like on hold with no music. Have contacted Vodafone and replacement is due tmrw so will see how it goes.

    Mark-UK,

I have the same exact model as you on AT&T network in the US. I feel the same way, I don't even want to make or answer a call now...

Sadly, I don't think a replacement is going to help, it seems like all are affected.

I just spoke to Apple support. Here is how it went.

I was told to do a full restore as new and that if the problem still exsists that would confirm it is a hardware issue and not software related. If it is hardware related I was told I would send the phone in for a replacement with a brand new (NOT a service or refurbished phone).

The big concern is that I already see sveral here that have received replacements that still exhibit the static issue.
