Q: *Important--iPhone4s Static/Crackling Noise

All,

There seems to be an increasing number of complaints coming in of iPhone 4s static/crackling noise coming from the phone when placing calls.  I personally had the same problem on an iPhone received 10/14.  Replacement devices seem to be having similar problems.  Here are the following symptoms:

-Very intrusive and abnormal crackling/static noise can be heard through the ear piece while on a call. More obvious in a quiet room.

-When call ends, the sound can STILL be heard coming from the back of the phone. Which means the source of the noise may be coming from there?

-Atleast one person noted that the noise can be stopped by shorting out the signal by placing hand over two top antenna bands forcing a "switch".

-Replacement devices are having same symptoms.

Is anyone NOT having the the symptoms described on the new iPhone4S?

iPhone 4, iOS 5

update: I spoke with apple support about this issue last week and they said they wanted to capture my phone to check it out and they would send me a replacement phone. I just received my new phone and it started crackling upon activation over 3G cellular network. It is definitely a 3G issue, probably the location of the antenna and the earpiece (maybe there needs to be something inbetween the two, maybe the wires are touching one another or the same piece of metal). I'm glad they are investigating my phone to figure out why the earpiece crackles while using 3G but disappointed to see my replacement phone has the same issue. It DOES sound like a bee trapped inside the phone!!

Does this static noise occurs on EDGE network? It's only problem on 3G yes ? How about static noise during camera recording? Its related that during recording its connected to 3G?

Kind of hard to test EDGE these days since the 3G switch is gone on the 4s. For me I only noticed it when calls were happening.

    Hi guys,

The crackling problem came with the "No Sim" and "No Service" problem with my iPhone 4S. When I updated to the latest build, 9A406, the crackling as well as the signal drop out problem went away. Try to check this link for the update how-to and let me know if it works. http://iphone-and-i.blogspot.com/2011/12/fixing-iphone-4s-signal-problem.html

Updating to 9A406 did not work for me. Still have the crackling/bee trapped in my phone sound when using 3G. :'(

After updating to *406 the annoying sound still persists.. As one of the users said earlier here - poor engineering !
Let's wait fo 5.1 and see what happens then .. Hope dies last, right ?

I am on my 3rd replacement iPhone 4S. 1 'refurb' and 2 fresh, brand new. All 3 have had the crackling/static issue. It drives me frigging insane. The Genius at Apple last time 'round said to call AT&T and have them re-provision my SIM/network. This did not fix anything. Seems like Apple just wanted to pass the buck.

My iPhone 4 had issues with the home button (double click actions on a single click) and now my 4S has this crackle garbage. Seriously getting tired of Ive's great aesthetic designs with sh*t usership results.

If 5.1 comes out and doesn't fix this I am moving on to a different phone. I just can't take this anymore.

I have this issue aswell where I will hear crackling static for about 3-5 seconds before my call connects on every outgoing call. I also was having the issue of no audio at all on outgoing calls, the recipient could here me but I couldn't here a thing not even the ringing. I changed a few setting and now just have the crackling to deal with. Apple needs to come out with a fix fast as audio issues are more annoying than low battery life, to me at least.

I am on my second 4S with the exact same issues. The nightmare I went through getting the first one replaced, I have decided not to even bother with this one. I will just hold out the 12 month contract and then get a new phone. Very disappointing problem considering the company swears by perfection!!

Disabling Siri doesn't help, restoring to factory settings either. You could even hear the noise when loading pages, you have to press your ear pretty hard to the receiver though. Or try using a speedtest.net app, you'll hear it. This *****!!!!! iPhone 4s 32gb white, NY.
