Q: *Important--iPhone4s Static/Crackling Noise

All,

There seems to be an increasing number of complaints coming in of iPhone 4s static/crackling noise coming from the phone when placing calls.  I personally had the same problem on an iPhone received 10/14.  Replacement devices seem to be having similar problems.  Here are the following symptoms:

-Very intrusive and abnormal crackling/static noise can be heard through the ear piece while on a call. More obvious in a quiet room.

-When call ends, the sound can STILL be heard coming from the back of the phone. Which means the source of the noise may be coming from there?

-Atleast one person noted that the noise can be stopped by shorting out the signal by placing hand over two top antenna bands forcing a "switch".

-Replacement devices are having same symptoms.

Is anyone NOT having the the symptoms described on the new iPhone4S?

iPhone 4, iOS 5

Small update ... after using the iphone for 4 days, it seems the crackling noise sometimes fades away, I suppose it also has something to do with the strength of the signal?

Did a full on restore (the noise became intolerable), with option to start using as a new iphone and the problem vanished.

Have both Siri and lift to talk to siri on, and those do not bring back the noise in calls.

(BTW, had the noise even with speaker on).

You had my hopes up. Did a full restore tonight, set up as new phone, and it's making the static noise just as bad as ever starting on the first call. Bummer! I'm now restoring from the backup that I created before restoring my phone, since there's no point in spending any more time than necessary. Waste of time, unfortunately.

Day 2 after restore and no cracking sound during calls.

Actually i did a new restore immediately after posting, and used restore from backup option.

Only difference i can think of the installations is that the crackling version of 5.1 software was installed OTA and no noise version was installed via laptop.

Good thing is that it seems it can be a software issue (was almost sure it was a hardware problem).

Bummer if you got your hopes up and it did not work for you, but i really did work in my case.

so I was thinking, I don't hear the crackling all the time. I notice it most when I'm at my computer and around my house and I'm wondering if it could be from the WiFi/Wireless connection?

I'm not sure. Some here have said that they do not hear it when on WiFi and that it is coming from the 3G network. With mine, I hear it at random, whether I'm on WiFi, or not. I am on ATT in U.S., so I don't have the option to turn 3G off. If I turn wireless data off and on WiFi, I still hear the static at random. So, on mine, it doesn't matter what I do. I might get the static, or I might not. Just a matter of luck. But, as I stated in a previous thread and a few others have confirmed; one thing that always works is to use the phone on the left side of my face and the static is mysteriously gone. Switch back to the right and there's the static again. Who knows???

I had this problem for quite some time. The solution for me was buying an unlocked phone directly from Apple after accidently putting my phone through the rinse cycle. I had oringally bought my phone on contract from a carrier in south korea. I came to the US recently and I heard the same crackling noise even while using an AT&T sim. After the washing machine inccident, and having to shell out for a new phone, I've experinced nothing but crystal clear calling.  I have an insurance policy on my original phone, so in the end I will just end up paying the deductible. But this does bring me to believe that the issue could be related to the carrier lock and why Apple didn't discover this issue during testing. Also, most review sites get unlocked phones, that's why most of the major sites haven't reported about this issue, like with antenna gate.

I have found a fix but need to have a Jailbroken 4s (JB), once JB simply turn siri off and take you sim out and repring iPhone, then put the sim card back and turn siri on again and it fixs the static sound, and the other way is without JB your iPhone is take the sim out turn off siri and reboot you device, this could fix it, i have not try this my self.

Can  please tell, me know if resolve this issue with you

I have tried the remove SIM, turn off SIRI, and reboot on my non jailbroken iPhone 4S 16GB. Did not change anything.

I am having the same problem with iPhone 4S when using 3G network. If disable it, the problem does not occur.

I have tested in other iPhones, Apple sent me a new iPhone, but the problem persists.

Note that iPhone 4 does not have the problem, just in 4S version.

I hope Apple recall these iPhones.
