Q: *Important--iPhone4s Static/Crackling Noise

All,

There seems to be an increasing number of complaints coming in of iPhone 4s static/crackling noise coming from the phone when placing calls.  I personally had the same problem on an iPhone received 10/14.  Replacement devices seem to be having similar problems.  Here are the following symptoms:

-Very intrusive and abnormal crackling/static noise can be heard through the ear piece while on a call. More obvious in a quiet room.

-When call ends, the sound can STILL be heard coming from the back of the phone. Which means the source of the noise may be coming from there?

-Atleast one person noted that the noise can be stopped by shorting out the signal by placing hand over two top antenna bands forcing a "switch".

-Replacement devices are having same symptoms.

Is anyone NOT having the the symptoms described on the new iPhone4S?

iPhone 4, iOS 5

I've tested in a various way and I think why the annoying noise is happened from iPhone 4S. It's definitely a hardware problem. If I use the Siri with 3G network, the noise is absolutely happened. But the airplane mode is ON and Wifi is also ON, there is no noise.. That means a 3G module inside the iPhone 4S makes a noise. I dont know the technical issue exactly, but the first reason is by using a 3G module.

    Update:

With every app that requires 3G connection (have not testet WI-FI yet) the static sound appears when you hold listen on the backside (around the apple logo). The seams like the sound appears when it is connected and loads data..??

I bought my girlfriend iPhone 4s for birthday and there have been several problems. It has a lot of static and that buzzing/crackling sound coming from the earpiece. She's on her 3rd iphone 4s and the same problem from different Apple Stores in Texas. We've been to the Apple store to exchange them and lastly went to the AT&T store to change out the sim card based on a recommendation from Apple Tech Support over the phone. At this point, she's ready to return the phone for a refund and wait to see if Apple gets their act together. She experienced network with issues with Siri going down, terrible battery life and the crackling issue. Too many issues at once for a new phone coming from the iphone 3gs. Definitely not a good birthday present. Anyone have any success yet with the crackling sound?

I have the same problem, due to 3G Module. When I deactivate the Cellular Data, the voice call goes fine without any noise. But with Cellular Dat on, I have the noise also during a call but in stand by mode.
Do you have any ideas if this could be fix by software upgrade or by replacing the phone?

About 75% Korean iPhone user have this problem ...

I think this is a hardware problem...

Apple should recall all the 4s if it can't be fixed

I'm with the Three.ie network in Ireland & was googling looking for info about the random bell/alert noise that my new iPhone 4S makes every now & then.

I didn't even know about the cracking problem.

However, this crackling/static just happened on my new iPhone 4S a few hours ago.

Both myself & the person I was talking to could hear the noise.

I hung up & called back & the noise was gone.

I bet this is happening to all devices, however, like me, people just put it down to a once off random thing & ignore it.

If this is hardware then recall!!

Sorry to say, I am posting this from the Apple Store Smith Haven Mall NY, where I bought the White iPhone 4S 64GB only to detect the static noise. (I did notice in reading this thread that a great number of White phone users are having this problem, but I can't be sure).

The next available genius is in 3 hours, so it is not worth waiting if even the replacement will have the same issue. I did restore, and as an electronics engineer am pretty confident that having people restore the phone's data can fix what seems to be obviously a design or manufacturing defect. If it is a firmware fixable issue, restoring would have worked for other people already.

Love Apple but after the horrible experiences with iCloud and now with the 4S, I am pretty disappointed in them.

I've been having the same problem with my one week old iPhone 4s, went to the apple store and i had to schedule an appointment in two more days. i hope they at least replace my phone and don't act like at&t people that pretended the noise was not there.

We are on our third iPhone 4s in six weeks.  All 16GB white models.

My wife swears that this new one was not staticy until I updated to 5.0.1.  Now, she gets lots of static again and numerous dropped calls.  I'll have to see if I can somehow revert back to 5.0.  If we cannot resolve this, the iPhone will have to go and I'm getting her a Droid until this is resolved.  I myself am on a Galaxy S II and no issues at all.
