iPhone 4S doesn't reliably use chosen audio input if paired with a bluetooth headset

After pairing a bluetooth headset with my iPhone 4S, my iPhone does not consistently use my chosen audio device when making calls to other people. Does not seem to be a problem when checking my voicemail.

Examples:

1. With my headset on (and showing a connection to my iPhone), I'll make a call. My iPhone will initially show my headset as the chosen audio device. Moments later, the speaker is automatically chosen, and tapping the button to switch back to the headset is ignored. Sometimes I can tap the button to switch to the iPhone, but the audio often gets lost (not on the iPhone, the speaker, or the headset, but the call is still connected).

2. With my headset on, I'll make a call with my iPhone chosen as the audio device. Despite showing the iPhone as the chosen device, the call actually uses the speaker. Attempting to choose the iPhone results in lost audio, as in the above example.

I have only seen this problem on my iPhone 4S. I have seen it with two different headsets (Motorola H270, Jawbone Icon), one of which (Icon) has never been paired with another phone. My wife's iPhone 4 running iOS 5 does not exhibit this problem. Turning my 4S off and on again seems to help for a while (less than a day). Removing all headset pairings from my 4S seems to resolve the issue, which is really not a solution since a hands-free device is legally required when driving.

I've tried backing up and restoring my iPhone and it seems to be working properly for now. In a day or two, I should know if it really is fixed.

I have the same issue. Yesterday, Apple telephone help walked me through backup/restore, etc. and it worked for a while until I paired with bluetooth again. Same issue then happened. Won't allow any audio choices and people on the other end are unable to hear me although I can hear them just fine. I may have to take the return the phone?

My issues are very similar. iPhone4s 64 I am currently using a Jawbone Icon, but it also happens with my car Bluetooth as well as my Motorola.

Everything is working fine but then I go to make a call, and it defaults to speakerphone. It will not release from speakerphone and if the call goes through, you cannot be heard on the other end. I have done the entire technical request. Resets, as well as reset as new phone, pair, unpaired. I even went into a apple store per request. They have no solution to the problem. Possibility of a Bluetooth hardware issue, but more than likely it’s acompatibility issue with iPhones 4s bluetooth 4.0

The last thing I notice is it will resetitself within a ½ hr or less. I knowthis because it happen as I was on my way to the apple store and I did not wantto reboot so they could see the problem, but by the time I got there, it hadreset on its own.

I have also looked but have not found a Bluetooth4.0 headset/ear piece to try with it.

Thanks for the reply. I just spent all morning at Apple Store. Finally agreed to take a new phone. I've bought a new bluetooth headset. Stayed for an hour and played with it and so far so good. Wednesday though after an hour with apple telephone support it worked for a few calls and then again no one could hear me.

I agree about the reset. I've done it several times and then I can get some calls off before it happens again.

If it starts again, the phone may get returned and I'll switch back to my Sony- Ericsson phone.

My problem was similar, incoming calls would not go to my bluetooth headset automaticly and the only way I could use the headset for incoming calls was to go to the Audio Source button (once the call connected) and change the audio source to my Headset. Since the change wouldn't stick I had to do this with each incoming call. This only occurred with inbound calls, outbound calls would alway use my headset if it was active.

I resolved the issue by going to Settings/General/Accessibility/Physical & Motor/Incoming Calls (seems like a strange place for this setting) and changing the setting from Default to Headset.

I didn't have this issue with IOS 5. Either the default was changed in IOS 5.01 or I changed the setting and forgot about it.

Hope this helps.

I had the exact same 4S "lost audio" issues and device refusal to acknowledge the selected audio "source" or port (iPhone/speaker/Bluetooth) as described above by user azrael. 4S will default to speaker 99% and when you select another source the audio gets "lost" (NO audio anywhere).

My issues occured with BOTH IOS 5 and post update to IOS 5.01. It seems to work only when it chooses to- and that is rarely. Love the device- hate the internal connectivity issues HELP! AppleSupport! 😮(

Not sure if this will resolve the problem in every case but this fixed my problem:

My 'Settings/General/Accessibility/Physical & Motor/Incoming calls' setting was set to default. I figured this meant it would go to an active bluetooth device if it found one since the choices were Default, Headset, and Speaker. Apparently this assumption is incorrect. When I changed the setting from Default to Bluetooth it resovled my problem. Incoming calls now connect to the headset if it is active and to the phone when it's not.

This seems like a weird place to find a critical phone setting but that's where they put it!!!

I am having the exact same problem discussed in this thread. The only Bluetooth my new 4S is paired with is the one in my car. But when I am away from the car, the phone automatically goes to speaker; will not let me switch from speaker; and if someone answers on the other end, I can hear them but they can't hear me.

Thanks for the added info snik.

I think the more- the merrier that Apple tech support will be to work out a fix?

I have also had incidents of placed (4-6) out calls (that I initiated) where I had NO audio (dead air). I then reboot the phone, re-attempt the call and when the audio works the distant end (recipient) states that they had the call arrive but heard no audio on their end...

Looks to be a significant "audio mapping" issue.

I have the same issue reported here, which happens occasionally for me (1 - 2x week, but sometimes more). I use a Jawbone Era bluetooth headset. Only way I have been able to fix is to restart my phone.

Anyone have any clue as to what precipitates this occuring? I haven't been able to figure out a pattern.

Any luck on Apple support acknowledging the bug?

sometimes without headset connection call audio directly goes to speaker
