"low bandwidth" option?

I like "Mail.app" when I'm using it on my computer at work where I have a T1 connection to the internet. However, from home I have a relatively slow modem. The program is just too "greedy" for bandwidth.

When I use Mail.app from home to look at the mail in my IMAP mailbox at work, it's always checking the status of all of the mailboxes, downloading headings from boxes I don't really care about, downloading messages to better memorize their contents for the sake of Spotlight, etc. which slows down the computer and prevents me from opening webpages, etc.

I would like it to just show my the headings of the messages in my Inbox (not any other folders) and download the contents only if I specifically open a message.

Is there a way to set Mail.app to do that? The only seemingly related option I can find in Preferences is an option not to cache any messages. I've selected that, but it doesn't seem to stop Mail from downloading the contents of messages without asking me, it only means that it forgets the contents immediately.

Alternatively, is there a mail reader out there (especially free or shareware) that just gives these basic functions for an IMAP mail program: see contents of inbox by heading, show messages when opened, and otherwise do nothing?

Thanks,

Alex

Here are the settings under "Accounts/Advanced":

"Enable this account" is checked

"Include when automatically checking for new mail" is not checked (I hoped that this would save time, but if I ever hit the "get mail" button, it checks not only the Inbox, but all of the boxes, including hundreds of "Public" boxes that I have no control over)

"Compact mailboxes automatically" is checked, but "greyed" out so that I apparently cannot change it

"Keep copies of messages for offline viewing:" has "don't keep copies of any messages" selected

Below a bar, where it says "check with your sys admin before changing any of the advanced options below":

"Automatically synchronize changed mailboxes" is not checked,
"IMAP Path Prefix" is blank,
"Port" is 143,
"Use SSL" is not selected, and finally
Authentication is "password"

Alex,

I had guessed you meant you had changed the keep copies . . option, but just wanted to clarify.

When you manually choose to get new mail, where do you do this from -- the Icon in the Tool bar, or in the pull-down under Mailbox?

I am investigating some issues that have apparently come about with Tiger, regarding the caching of messages, and other things. I will try to do some tests aimed at the question you asked, and whether any difference is found between the Toolbar Icon, versus pull-down where only one account can be selected (assuming you might have more than one account).

Alex,

If you control-click on a mailbox in the Sidebar, and choose Get Info, and then select the IMAP account, you should get a list of all mailboxes and folders. If you then highlight only the Inbox, and click on the Show Messages button at the bottom, does download activity commence, or does it wait until you choose a message? With my bandwidth, I am not sure I can tell, without further tests on the caching issue.
