I am having the same problem.   I had dr's appointments, meetings, and such on my calendar and now they have all disappeared.  I don't understand why this is happening.  At first they appeared but today when I checked my phone, they are no longer there.  I am frustrated because I cannot find much help on the website about what is causing it and why it is occurring.

Is your iPhone (calendar) synced to iCloud or iTunes. You have to sync to one or the other not both. I had the same problem when I set up my wife's iPhone after updating to iOS5. I had both iCloud and iTunes syncing "on" for the calendars. If you are going to use iCloud go into iTunes and uncheck "Sync iCal Calendars", if you are going to use iTunes then go into the iCloud settings on your iPhone and turn off Calendars. After I unchecked in iTunes and synced again all the info that was on the calendars returned.

Make sure that you have on your "Mac" you have "Calendars" in iCloud settings checked. "System Preferences", iCloud, and then place a check next to "Calendars". On your iPhone have "Calendars" ON in iCloud settings and have "Sync iCal Calendars" unchecked in iTunes. Then sync and now your calendar will look the same no matter if you are viewing the calendar form your "Mac", "iPhone", or through "iCloud" in your web browser. Any change you make to the calendar on your iPhone will appear on you Mac and iCloud calendars.

The problem is with Sync. To solve go to Settings->Mail,Contacts, Calendars, scroll down to Calendars, set Sync to All Events. All calendar items that have disappeared will reappear.
