music~iphone crashes on startup

it was fragile since the "upgrade" to ios5, taking three or four times as long to initialize. it crashed reliably when rotating the device to landscape and thus the cover-flow view (which stutters on all apps that use it). but now it won't even initialize. tap its icon. a window is drawn. crash.

the only saving grace is this broken app is only a front-end to the actual music player. you can still listen to tunes by double-clicking the home button and using the controls displayed, although once again start-up is three or four times slower than on ios4.

i filed bug report 10292857 at bugreport.apple.com. so far no response from engineering. when i get back to my main machine tonight, i'll be adding the seven or eight crash reports generated today to the bug report.

meanwhile, i want to downgrade my ipod to 4.x but apparently this is impermissible ....

iMac(s), Macbook Air, Time Capsule, Mac OS X (10.7), too many ipods ...

Thanks for the speedy reply !!!

I'm trying a restore right now.... fingers crossed!

You're right about the double-click; but with 5342 songs in my library..... skip track...skip track...

I'll end up with more than a sore butt from the drive.

"Plan B" is to take my Macbook or iPad and use my Bose SoundDock and a power inverter.

Problem is I have to fly back with all this stuff.

Thanks again!

An Update:

oh Wonder of Wonders!

It works (sort of)

I did a restore; then a restore from backup.

everything seems to work, but there is a 2-3 second lag between

selecting <playlist> or <artists> or <songs> or <albums>

kinda like an old windows box...

and just to make it more interesting the lag time is both variable and intermittent

(a perfect bug)

For info purposes this is an iPhone 4s 32G running iOS 5.0.1

the 5.0.1 upgrade didn't fix the bug for me. nor did a restore. your mileage (kilometre-age?) may vary. i did get a response from apple engineering so they definitely are taking this seriously.

if you build a random playlist, that may solve the need to skip tracks - that's what i do. i also only load tracks that i've given 5 stars to on the gadget, which weeds out lots of dross (for purposes of this discussion, we'll just ignore my poor taste in music).

hope this helps

I'm glad to hear Apple responded. What's the point of fixing a battery issue at the expense of not being able to use the thing ?!?!?

Joking aside; I will use your suggestion of creating a random playlist; however, I have never rated songs in my library ( how good the song is depends on my mood).

I was hoping to take a cavalier "road trip - **** the data roaming charges" attitude and just have Siri play what

I told her to.

That may still work.

Thanks again for your help

I went to the "Genius bar" in an Apple Store and they changed my iPhone 4S to a new one and after that it works fine... before this change I was having similiar issues to the ones described here: Huge lag in music player response until it freezes, restore helped for a while but the issue came back. After they change the phone yesterday I haven't experienced any of those problems so far (I'll keep my fingers crossed).

Thanks for the info!

A friend of mine has the identical phone; when I get back from Florida we'll try to re-create the

problem ( he is a software engineer and very very good at diagnostics )

It would be interesting if this were a hardware glitch.

Siri is able to find and play songs without difficulty. It seems as if the touch screen goes to sleep

for awhile. Did you experience something similar?

At least it's comforting to know that if it doesn't work Apple will make it right.

it's been three months since i opened bug#10292857 with apple engineering and music~iphone still crashes almost every single time i try to start it. the few times it didn't crash, it was teathered to the host computer with the iphone configuration utility running.

but just got it to crash right now. check out this console log:
