changing scanner from TIFF to pdf

How can I change the scanner settings on myMac from TIFF files to pdfs? Reverts to TIFF leaving docs at 8MB or more and impossible to attach to emails.

Thanks

thanks for this - i have done this and have locked to save changes but it is still keeping the file size at 9MB. i changed the resolution to 150, made sure it was scanning in B&W only but still seems to be huge files. The documents I was scanning were only 5 typed pages so should be much smaller than 9MB and when i try and forward them as email attachments they are being rejected!

Having said that, it has at least kept the settings to pdf - thank you for taking the trouble to respond!

Scanning to PDF just means you're embedding a raster image into a PDF container. So it the scan were an 8 MB TIFF, then you're going to end up with an 8 MB PDF, with a little extra for the PDF since you're containing one type of image (the TIFF) inside of another format (the PDF).

To get the size down, you can do a few things.

• Drop the resolution way down (like screen res of 72 dpi)

• Save the files as JPEG with moderate compression

• A combination of both

Be aware that as you do these size reducing steps, you're also losing pixel data. So a small image may look good on screen, but will not have enough data to make good prints.

You could also reduce the resolution as you have to 150 (not bad, but not great for printing) and save them as PNG. That format is a compressed format like JPEG, but is lossless. So you're not destroying the image while reducing the space it takes up as JPEG does.
