set HDMI resolution using iPad 2 and Digital AV adapter

I have an iPad 2 and a Digital AV adapter. I want to set the HDMI resolution to 1080i or 720p, because my TV does not support 1080p.

I have an older TV with a DVI input that does not support 1080p. When I connect the iPad Digital AV adapter directly to my TV (using a DVI/HDMI adapter cable), the image from the iPad is displayed on the TV. Somehow the iPad determines what the maximum resolution is of the connected device and sets itself accordingly. However, what I really want to do is connect the iPad to my A/V receiver (Onkyo TX-NR809), using an HDMI input, so that I get both video and sound over the HDMI connection. When I do this, the iPad sets the video resolution to 1080p. The receiver can only upconvert video signals; it can't downconvert 1080p video to 1080i, so it sends the 1080p video signal from the iPad to the TV, but the TV cannot display it.

I had this issue both before and after upgrading the iPad to IOS 5.

Is there any way to "force" the iPad 2 to display video at a lower resolution (1080i or 720p or even lower)) when using the Digital AV adapter, even when it is connected to an HDMI input that supports 1080p?

BTW, I looked at some other A/V receivers, and none of them seem to be able to downconvert video signals, so this is not a unique problem.

Thanks,

David

interesting, my Onkyo txsr604 has hdmi in and out but is "rated" hdmi 1.1, i get an image but it is poor and pink when i route my ipad2 to the digital video adapter to the reciever to the projector. If I go straight to the 1080p compatable projector, the image is fine. but then no work around to get sound to the receiver......this in my case is also true with an upconverting dvd player i have bad image through the reciever, but in its case i can go to the projector directly over hdmi and use toslink or composite digital cable to receiver. (though hdmi audio can be superior) seems in your case there should be a setting to lower external resolution, but since there isnt really a sound "card" maybe no? you are using hdmi to dvi cable?

there is a composite adapter as well I believe?
