iphone 4s high pitch noise with headphone jack

There is a loud high pitched noise from the headphone jack that makes the iPhone 4S unusable. There is no change after the usual fixes such as restarting / backup and restore. I'm guessing a software fix is needed?

Please help.

Same problem. After 5-10 minutes, only when on the phone, never when listening to music, a noise that makes the earbuds unsuable. Removing the earbuds and using the phone directly works but this makes the phone unusable in the car per CA law.

I took my phone into the Apple Store, got a new one yesterday, same problem.

Aloha Spirit, did as you suggested.

Apple, we need a fix...

I don't know if this helps, but I had similar issues on my 3GS that turned out to be the plug that I was using in the headphone jack. It appears that the contacts were misaligned enough to short two contacts, or perhaps send the wrong signal to the wrong contact. In my case, cramming the plug in extra tight fixed the problem. Perhaps the mic phantom power on the 4S is on only when an app expects to be using the mic, as might be the case with a phone call but not listening to music, and only then would you be noticing a short caused by an improperly fitting plug? If a different plug (headphone) makes the problem go away, maybe you can still use the device you want by inserting an extension cable between your device and the phone jack.

Thanks, but I've now done some significant trouble shooting and am pretty sure that it's either a part going wonky or (I pray) a software issue.

Apple Ear Buds, both brand new, one pair came with the phone. Doesn't always happen but once it does doesn't stop until you hang up and restart the call, then it's fine (without, per experiment 53 today, touching the earbuds) Today, one of the times, I was sitting on my couch with the phone utterly still on the couch next to me when it started. Not mechanical.

Can you tell I spend a lot of time on the phone? 🙂

Two phones, same issue.

Need this admitted to and fixed. Where is Woz when you need him? (speaking as a Prius owner!)
