Hello, I was wondering how many flavors of Mac OS X 10.7.2 there are and what the differences are therein?

I have a small lab at my disposal, I've extracted the InstallEDS.dmg by following instructions from AFP548's page from the following models over the past few days:

MacBookPro8,2, MacBookAir 4,2, MacPro5,1, MacBook5,1, and iMac12,3.

I figured the quickest way to determine any differences was to compare their MD5 checksums (from terminal type: md5 [location/to/installEDS.dmg]

This is what I found:

MacBookPro8,2

MD5 (/Volumes/Test/Mac OS X Install Data/InstallESD.dmg) = 412cee9c4c77c04c9c8489c363a7e2e4

MacBookAir 4,2

MD5 (/Volumes/Test/Mac OS X Install Data/InstallESD.dmg) = 412cee9c4c77c04c9c8489c363a7e2e4

MacPro5,1

MD5 (/Volumes/Test/Mac OS X Install Data/InstallESD.dmg) = 5a8bc4c636f35c855250c7b5508ae7a5

MacBook5,1

MD5 (/Volumes/Test/Mac OS X Install Data/InstallESD.dmg) = 5a8bc4c636f35c855250c7b5508ae7a5

iMac12,3

MD5 (/Volumes/Test/Mac OS X Install Data/InstallESD.dmg) = 5a8bc4c636f35c855250c7b5508ae7a5

Likewise I compared the installESD.dmg from my App store purchase.

AppStore download:

MacBook5,1

MD5 (/Users/[user]/Desktop/10.7.2/Install Mac OS X Lion.app/Contents/SharedSupport/InstallESD.dmg) = 5a8bc4c636f35c855250c7b5508ae7a5

How many variants of Mac OS X 10.7.2 are there and what is the difference between the images?

Thank you!

There is one, since no new Macs have been released since 10.7.2 was made available.

Run a program like this on them, find the true duplicates and please post your results.

(work on copies and change the names to make sure you not getitng false positives?)

I suspect there is only one OS X 10.7, but hardware drivers may be exclusive to each download, or grouped together, resulting in the differences in the downloads.

Sort of like the "grey disk" exclusiveness to a particular Mac model.

    They are the same.

The InstallESD.dmg file with MD5 hash 5a8bc4c636f35c855250c7b5508ae7a5 is the version distributed by Apple via the Mac App Store or via Internet Recovery.

The InstallESD.dmg file with MD5 hash 412cee9c4c77c04c9c8489c363a7e2e4 is contained within the InstallESD.dmg file mentioned above. You can see this for yourself by using a program such as 7-Zip and opening the InstallESD.dmg file with MD5 hash 5a8bc4c636f35c855250c7b5508ae7a5.

Hello, I downloaded a copy of DeltaWalker (trial mode) and compared the contents of all the installESD.dmg files I had. I found no differences. That's good news, I was under the impression that Apple was releasing hardware specific versions of Lion.

    Thank you for your responses!

Are these MD5s correct?  I think im having trouble downloading the install file, doesnt seem like its completing correctly.

    Should it be 5a8bc4c636f35c855250c7b5508ae7a5  ?

Yes that MD5 checksum is correct. The file (and checksum) has not changed since Apple posted the 10.7.2 update.

If you can, try downloading using a different internet connection.
