I have an iphone 4. When I updated all my downloaded apps disappeared. Where are they and how do I retrieve them?

Sync them back by connecting to the computer that they are backed up on.
my apps were only on my iphone4, today when I plugged my iphone into my laptop it updated and then the phone was wiped
i took it to apple, they sorted and my phone was back in action, with the new updates (new apps) and the old were there
i walked out of apple, went to use an app and all the old apps were GONE!
went back in and apple said, when I plug in next iphone will sync and apps will reappear
