    P.S. ccchaps,

Just in case you did the "delete music trick", simply resyncing your music via iTunes may not competely repair your music libirary on your iDevice.  In that case, I have heard this may work:

    1.  First deselect syncing music in iTunes.

    2.  Sync your iDevice.

    3.  This should completely wipe clean all music from your iDevice.  (Unlike the settings-->usage-->music-->"swipe to delete" method on your iDevice which usually does not do a complete wipe of your music, see below)

    4.  Then turn syncing music back on in iTunes.

    5.  Resync your iDevice.

    5.  This should reinstall your muisic library back on your iDevice.  If you have a lot of songs, this will take a while.  But, when done your music library on your iDevice will hopefully be whole and complete once again.

Deleting your music from your iDevice via settings--->Usage-->Music-->Swipe to Delete often (always) does not do a 100% complete delete of your music.  This is why it has tricked some people into thinking their music is still there.  Soon they find that is not true.  Most is gone.  A bit remains to fool you.  The music library gets totally janked by this method and it does nothing to really repair your "other" data.

As am aside, I will say that the settings-->usage-->"swipe to detete" seems to be a half-butt way to delete many things.  I've tried it for photos and sometimes it does not work at all.  Sometimes it does not remove all photos.  This functionality of iOS 6.XXX appears to be another example of a half-baked effort by Apple and I hope iOS 7 improves it.

Others have asked if the moderators of this forum could remove the "delete music trick" from this discussion.  That would certainly be nice.

Not sure if this will help anyone but I had a Genius Bar appointment yesterday at the Apple store for a hardware issue but also asked about the "Other" while I was there since mine takes up 6.5gb! He chuckled at me when I told him all that I had gone through trying to fix the problem (things I read on this thread). He said it is kind of an "in between" space where 3rd party apps store data (we ready knew this...) but that the only ways to fix it were to:

    1) restore from backup

    And if that doesn't work

    2) restore as new phone

I had already tried restoring from backup, among many other suggestions in the thread, and the "Other" had stayed at 6.5gb; the only thing I hadn't tried was restore as new phone. I received a new phone due to my hardware issues anyway so I cannot vouch for it working on my other phone, but I made sure to not restore any old backups and my other is basically nonexistent again! Hooray!

Well I've finally resolved my problem.   I went nuclear and restored as new phone.

Took about 4+ hours to get all my settings, apps, layouts exactly the way I had them.   I forgot to get a copy of my Notes but fortunately I am able to retrieve off my last iTunes backup using ibackupbot.   I will also work on transferring my game saves (angry birds especially) when I have some time.

    I had 2.0Gb of Other.   Now I have 700MB

I had only 1.0GB of free space.   Now I have 2.8Gb.

My old text contacts are gone.   Thank god.

All of the orphaned MMS attachments that I was hauling around are finally gone.

The phone seems much more responsive.

Battery life is now awesome.    Still 100% after 21 mins of usage and 51 mins of standby.

My icloud backup went from 1.1GB to 128MB, and this is after I have logged into all of my accounts and set my app preferences.

It isn't for the faint of heart, but after having a nagging shutdown issue on my iPhone5 the genius ran diagnostics and found lots of crash reports on the phone, all pointing to corrupt data.    I guess it was time.

I will follow this post to offer my help to anyone else.   It would be great if apple had some better utilities for managing your settings/backup files, but after spending a few hours on is maintenance so far I'm pretty happy with the end result.

I had 1.46 GB of Other data on my iPhone 5. I tried all the tricks specified in this forum except Restore but nothing worked. iused Phone Clean app and BOOM it detected all "Cache and Offline files" size as 1.46 GB and removed the Other data Awesome!! funny thing is i used the app before and it didnt detect any offline files..Strange..Most strangest thing is when i connected to iTunes it says 1.64GB Other data and free memory as 1.46 GB.. too funny!! I hope it didnt delete any of my original data like pics, songs etc.

Brilliant! Thanks for the tip, worked for me!

Funny. I've done the PhoneClearing and I have about 1GB more space now but the "other data" remains the same. the queston remains: where was this data that got deleted?

  • rae067 Calculating status...

The delete music trick does sort of work but it really does delete music.  It has to delete something!  That something is your music.  It doesn't delete all of it like it should though.  I haven't actually noticed any missing music and I appear to have all of it.

However, this may not be a problem for you if you use streaming services such as Rdio or Spotify.

Hi, this recently worked for me and got rid of all the "other"

BUT!!! Make sure that your device is not plugged into the pc or anything like that, because on the first try it deleted all my music and made absoulte no difference in anything whatsoever.

The second time, after syncing all my music back onto my iPhone, I followed the prompts again, this time without being plugged in.

Vola! My music still remains the same and the "other" is gone. 2.5gB is back!

I just had over 3GB of junk under Other, so I tried the Settings/General/Usage delete Music idea, rebooted and hooked up to iTunes; and now I have no Other usage at all. So there's something up in there that's all hidden away taking up space.

Yes, and now your music won't play right. It will still appear in the listing, but it won't play or will play scrambled. The "something that's hidden up in there" was the album art for the music you deleted.

Sadly, Lawrence is right and has been right in his postings on this particular music "fix" over and over and over.  I know this forum is galactic in size and so it is easy to stumble on the wrong page(s) (the ones that suggest to delete music).  At the same time it is also easy to miss the many other pages that explain why the fix doesn't really work.  Many of those latter pages contain clear and well-informed explanations from Lawrence.

Those who have recently posted that they have solved their "other" data problems by the "delete" music trick will eventually find out that much of their music is actually gone or it will play as if it is on hallucinagins.

There is always going to be SOME "other" data.  Not ALL "other" data is evil.  It is a catch-all word Apple uses for a wide variety of data that does not fit in the more traditional memory usage catagories.  Lawrence has articulated many of those catagories in previous posts.

Because forum moderators are only present to watch out for violations of forum rules they can't be expected to clean up this forum of the suggestions that not only don't work, but actually do harm.  That's too bad, because at this point this discussion thread really needs a good vacuum cleaning.

Please Lord...bring us iOS 7 with better data management coding.  I find this incredibly embarrassing in some ways as I have about 12 former students who work as programmers for Apple.  They were quite smart and insightful when they were in my class.  I can't help wonder what has happened to their minds.

    [USED IN ANOTHER THREAD]

I am having these OTHER issues and am tired of doing all this research, so I have decided to just restore the phone as new but with that comes the software update.

I avoided getting the updates months ago and have been ignoring the annoying indicator in settings because I heard of the various issues with THE UPDATE and my phone is still relatively new. (no time for phone chaos)

Now that im faced with restoring my phone as new I have to update but other threads make me think I should keep looking for other storage solutions.  [its my birthday and i cant even take pictures ].

Updates frighten me and I want to avoid the Apple runaround (not a ppl person).

I have an iphone 4. What would you all suggest? (are the software update bugs fixed?)

Should I just update and pray that I dont have "hardware" issues?

Not a big Apple fan right now. The more I research this OTHER issue, i find more issues with the solutions.

    Please help.
